A 25-year-old Sega mascot, Ecco the Dolphin, is making a potential comeback. Sega has filed trademarks for 'Ecco' and 'Ecco the Dolphin' in Japan, hinting that an upcoming game may be in development.

Background on Ecco The Dolphin

The original Ecco The Dolphin was released in 1992 for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Master System, Game Gear, and Sega CD. It was followed with other titles such as 'Ecco: The Tides of Time' (1994) and 'Ecco Jr.' (1995), before transitioning to the Dreamcast in 2000 with 'Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future'.

What Does This Mean for Fans and Gamers?

Is it trademark maintenance, or is Sega planning something more substantial? Only time will tell.

What do you hope that Sega include in new Ecco game?

Only a decade or so late to cash in on vaporwave

Imagine a VR Ecco experience. Propel yourself just below the waves in the chill ocean, jump out of the water occasionally for fun.

Just don't jump too high...

Did…you play Ecco much? That game is terrifying, and in VR it would be intense.

Fuck the vortex machine level.

I was just gonna say a remake of this game done right could be killer

I play VR regularly, including some stuff with relatively free movement, but with all the dashes and jumps, my inner ear is going "Nope, no you don't".

More "background" on Ecco : it's inspired by the works of a crazy researcher obsessed with dolphins, aliens and hallucinogenic drugs, in no particular order. Fitting.

I've only played through the first one, back in the 90s on the PC version. Completed it several times, I had fewer games and too much time back then. That story included a completely straight bootstrap paradox around the middle, which blew my mind a bit.

Years later, I got it and the second one on the Wii, for old time's sake. They aged terribly, I don't have that kind of patience anymore. The shitty wiimote D-pad certainly didn't help, but wow those time-limited barrier eating things and those pixel-perfect dashes through octopuses and currents are just tedious.

Wait, you mean that guy that gave dolphins acid?

They could blend some of the old game mechanics with aspects from Subnautica or Abzu. I hope Sega can keep up their good streak.

My hope: a cool new Ecco game like the final entry in the series.

Reality: Gambling simulator using environment conscious dolphins as a mascot.
