He's not going to face any real punishment so why bother? They just don't want to waste political capital on this.

[–] Mbourgon@lemmy.world 18 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

One thing I’ve heard is that once he’s sentenced he’s a felon, which means businesses he owns in certain states can so longer sell alcohol since it’s owned by a felon. I believe Florida is one of those.

[–] 5in1k@lemm.ee 16 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Like they'll enforce that. Dude is absolutely above all laws it has been blatantly shown over and over.

The cool part is that people are trying over and over and over again.

[–] Huckledebuck@sh.itjust.works 1 points 17 hours ago

Ha! Give the orange turd what he deserves!

I'm just kidding. This makes me sad.

“You’ll take that slap on your wrist and you’ll like it.”

[–] takeda@lemm.ee 10 points 23 hours ago

It isn't even a slap.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 57 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Put. His. Ass. In. Prison! He's fucking guilty. Anything less is an abdication of justice. Let the constitutional chips fall where they may. Trump stalled and delayed and avoided this as long as he could, it's not the judge's fault the President might be inaugurated from prison.

[–] finley@lemm.ee 31 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This judge could’ve done it, but he backed down because he’s a fucking weakling.

The same time travelers that consider traveling back in time to kill, Hitler will also consider the same about Trump and the pieces of shit who enabled him

[–] TBi@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

I wonder if we don’t get time travellers because this is the “best” timeline.

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

Or maybe there was a madman who killed like 100,000 people and time travelers shot him and got Hitler instead, so they garaged the time machine.

[–] finley@lemm.ee 2 points 15 hours ago

What a frightening thought

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Standard sentencing guidelines wouldn't likely give him jail time.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

The guidelines for a first offense would give him fines and probation, but the judge has indicated he's inclined to give him nothing.

The judge would be entirely within the margins to give Trump actual jail time, though.

[–] orcrist@lemm.ee 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

The judge could try to give him jail time, but we all know that some appeals court would throw it out, and there's a risk that they might also throw out the verdict with it. So it's safer to go with an empty sentence.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago

Nah, see this is the attitude that allows him to continue doing whatever he wants. Force the appeals court to make up some bullshit and further expose their corruption. Judges have discretion in sentencing, and appeals need to be based on something more than "that's not fair."

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

'standard sentencing guidelines' likely don't include things like 'the crimes committed helped the defendant to obtain the office of president of the united states, allowing him and his associates to profit to the tune of billions of dollars; harmed millions of individuals and the environment; and set the nation and world back a decade or more'

unlawfully interfering with the election helped the convicted to obtain the ultimate result from the commission of that offense: the highest office in the land. the punishment here should reflect that--maximum allowed by law, both in time-to-serve for each count, and the financial penalty.

I'm fact it does.Falsifying business records isn't usually a felony. But since it was seemed to be covering up another crime (defrauding the American people) it became a felony.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 30 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (4 children)

Oh no he might ~~pay a fine!~~ spend the next decade appealing paying a fine!

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

Not even a fine lol. What a joke

[–] pivot_root@lemmy.world 4 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

With his lifestyle, nature will pardon him from having to pay that fine long before it gets to the point where he can't appeal it to a higher court.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago

But he'll be a convicted felon, so he won't be able to buy a gun in the state of New York anymore! We got him!

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 2 points 1 day ago

If the consequences are a fine, it's only illegal for poor people.

6 hours of community service.

Pending appeal.

[–] shoulderoforion@fedia.io 2 points 23 hours ago

imagine if the judge said fuck it and sentenced him to prison

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago (5 children)

I hope I’m wrong, but it wouldn’t surprise me if everything recently wasn’t according to plan. Everyone stalls the trials long enough to get Trump elected, and now that he’s elected, let the trials continue until he’s found guilty. Use that as a means to impeach Trump from office, and then replace him with a younger, less smelly, boot licker that’s easier to control.

[–] usernamesAreTricky@lemmy.ml 25 points 1 day ago

He already was found guilty on 34 counts by a jury in May. This is about his sentencing

[–] BeanGoblin@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Trump would never let himself go down like that. He will burn the country down before that happens. With his cult, he has the means to do it. The Republicans made a monster and they are stuck with him.

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Unfortunately, the rest of us are stuck with him too.

[–] sik0fewl@lemmy.ca 2 points 23 hours ago

This is just an air of impartiality so that they can claim the same for all the terrible thing they are about to do.

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Love ridiculous conspiracy theories. You need more "Russia" or "China" though.

[–] mystik@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Then everyone goads Trump till he turns on his former masters and they all burn it down.
