Summary

Jean-Marie Le Pen, founder of France’s far-right National Rally (formerly National Front), has died.

A former paratrooper, he led the party from 1972 to 2011 and was known for inflammatory rhetoric, including Holocaust denial and praise for the Nazi-collaborating Vichy regime, which led to multiple convictions.

He ran for president five times, shocking France in 2002 by advancing to the runoff against Jacques Chirac.

A divisive figure, he was expelled from the party by his daughter, Marine Le Pen, in 2015 as she sought to moderate its image.

Depressing how so many despicable people get to live to such high ages.

It's kinda amazing the type of life you can have when you can afford the best healthcare.

[–] kescusay@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

I don't know how much comfort this will bring, but rest assured that hate-filled bigoted assholes generally don't live long. The constant stress of seething about everyone and everything around them makes guys like Le Pen the exception, not the rule.

The only reason this particular human sphincter lived a long time is because he had access to high-quality medical care.

Pure fucking spite and vinegar.

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 51 points 1 day ago

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Only the good die young.

Also France has kickass health care.

[–] Ethalis@jlai.lu 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And, just like that, 2025 is already up for a very good start

[–] idefix@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure they (FN / RN) will leverage on his death to gain voters.

[–] P1nkman@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

I hope he's buried next to a black family. Also, congratulations, France, you just got a new public toilet!

Rot in piss

I’ll never wish death on a person. That’s a line I can’t cross and still think of myself as a good person. That said, I have no problem celebrating a terrible person’s death.

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 day ago

"I’ve never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure."

[–] Mysteriarch@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 day ago

Many of those terrible people don't give you the same courtesy though...

[–] Numenor@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago
