Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

It won't disappear. It will just become an unaffordable luxury item.

I know it isn't exactly the same but there are as many varieties of artificial vanilla out there. It's not disappearing, we're just not concerned with the original

People who do pastry and food are absolutely concerned.

And they will get over it. Our current banana isnt the same as the old one but its that or nothing.

First thought when I read this headline was this is absurd, vanillin is super easy to synthesize the scent/flavor isn't going anywhere. Now actual beans may become super scarce which sucks for sure.

"along a very narrow band of the earth, between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn."

Uhh, I wouldn't consider that very narrow, especially given that it's 36% of Earth's landmass and a third of all people live in it

Is there any reason, if the specific conditions are so narrowly defined, that we can’t grow the orchid hydroponically in a controlled environment anywhere in the world?

It's really expensive. Cultivation outside Mexico already depends on child labor because the bees it needs only live in Mexico

The original post is a gift link. People shouldn't be hitting the paywall for the next 30d unless one of the following is true:

  • They've got Javascript disabled
  • They're running a device which strips the gift token off the URL
  • Their device desperately needs a reboot

If I don't listen to when my machine and browser when they beg for a reboot, why would I do so for a gift article?

I haven't had javascript enabled in a decade. site doesn't work I only vm or sandbox or similar if I absolutely need to use the site.
