No one in my family likes Rocky Horror and it kills me inside, I forced them to watch it, why wouldn't they automatically love a coked out Tim Curry in drag? What's there not to love!?!

I'm sorry to tell you that your family is broken.

if you aspire to get everyone in the world to adore all the same things you adore, then you're in for a pretty disappointing life

*If you aspire to get everyone in the world to adore all the same things you adore, then you'll sift out the people that don't and be left with good friends who do.

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

To add to this: there is nobody who likes everything you like. There will always be things you/others enjoy but others/you don't. So if you will be left with nobody of you actually do it like that.

not saying you're wrong, but i was responding to someone who clearly isn't happy about the fact that not everyone loves the same things he does

[–] Drusas@kbin.run 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That person was clearly unhappy about that one specific thing not being appreciated. That doesn't mean they feel that way about every piece of media they enjoy.

And to be honest, it's totally fair. When I recommend a movie to someone, it's not because I want them to love what I love. It's because I want to share my joy (or whatever feeling is appropriate to the piece) with them and it's a bit sad if they can't experience that feeling as well.

ok, you use the word "recommend," while the person i responded to said "force," which i'm sure doesn't mean at gunpoint, but by being insistent, demanding, naggy, and other insufferable behaviors, and then got upset that they didn't instantly become also obsessed.

is that you?

[–] Drusas@kbin.run 1 points 1 year ago

You're right, I glossed over the use of the word "force". For those less forceful and more reasonable, my comment stands.

I went to a midnight showing in LA and Harrison Ford was there with his kid. Just to re-enforce that Harrison Ford is cooler than your family.

In my circle of friends when I was younger it was Monty Python. I love their stuff especially the movies, but a lot of my "group" didn't seem to get it.

I have different friends now.

Btw, that's the cover for the Cranberries' "Bury the Hatchet". You should definitely check it out if you're into 90' alternative. I'll make sure you ENJOY IT!!!!!

This meme has a weird amount of Terraria energy to it

[–] FatTony@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

I feel personally attacked here

[–] solsangraal@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

i love when someone demands that i watch some movie or listen to some music they worship, and get all butthurt by my meh response

[–] PineRune@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I've found the problem with this is people over-hyping it. Just casually suggest it with one or two reasons why you like it.

[–] 5765313496@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Or do what I do, and downplay it. Sure, nobody ever takes my "suggestions", but at least they're never disappointed!

Hey man, lemme tell you about this game Portal: someone belittles you while you shoot a gun that doesn't even kill people.

[–] 5765313496@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Buddy, have you ever seen The Princess Bride? It's about a guy who reads a book to his grandson.

[–] 5765313496@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Have you ever read one of my favorite books: Project Hail Mary? No? It's about... uhh... a guy waking up and... hearing a voice. That happens on the first page, and... anything else would be a spoiler.

[–] Drusas@kbin.run 3 points 1 year ago

I tend to go with something along the lines of, "Oh my god, I love [movie]. It's pretty polarizing/It's definitely not for everyone, though." So far seems to set reasonable expectations and I've introduced a fair number of people to some movies they otherwise never would have seen and ended up really enjoying.

I mean the last time I did something similar (many many years ago) it just have me a stronger understanding that not everyone has the same experience as me, tastes matter, and that that's OK. It calmed me down a bit on gushing about stuff.
