Lemmy is the only thing close to social media that I have. Very possible, and I honestly love it.

[–] Towerofpain11@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

I'm the same, Lemmy only and like 5 people on snap chat. Wasn't hard to give up and now I love it.

[–] oleorun@real.lemmy.fan 3 points 2 years ago

Another one. Nothing but lemmy, and if it mainstreams (as in, my 70 year old parents used it) I'd stop that too.

[–] Chainweasel@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago (2 children)

This is the only social media I have, before it was Reddit. I haven't had a Facebook since 2016, I've never had any accounts on Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, etc ether.
I think it's totally possible to go without social media if you really want to.

[–] Albinjose7345@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Like everyone, lemmy is the app that am mostly using. Maybe because of eternity app.

And am trying to quit every other media as it becomes annoying. Its cluttering my mind.

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 years ago

Do what's good for you

For some people it means unfollowing toxic accounts and limiting contacts, for others it might mean deleting accounts.

You also don't have to do it all at once. Unfollow accounts when posts come up, or take a pass through your stuff in a while

[–] Bebo@literature.cafe 3 points 2 years ago

That's actually quite similar to what I've been doing. No FB or any of the other platforms since 2015. Only reddit since then and now lemmy. Since August started using Mastodon which I mostly use to post stuff I find interesting, usually articles and whatever I maybe reading about, instead of doomscrolling.

No fb, no twitter, no reddit, no whatsapp, no snapchat. 3 people on Signal, 1 on XMPP. Life was never this wise.

[–] miss_brainfart@lemmy.ml 10 points 2 years ago

It's quite easy if you never were (much) on social media to begin with

[–] GutterPunch@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yup, I did! Then I joined Lemmy...

[–] Orbituary@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)
[–] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Definitely the same thing

[–] Usernameblankface@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Depends.

Do you have friends? Do they use a social media platform to stay in touch?

If yes and yes, then it would be very hard to let it go, because your friend group would go with it.

If yes and no, it should be easy. But maybe it's your entertainment so it won't be easy to quit.

If no and no, you might have a very hard time leaving social media because it's sold as an opportunity to build up a friend group, and social media can pretend to be a friend group that isn't really there if you let it.

[–] Raffster@kbin.social 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I just never joined any. Used Reddit mostly for entertainment never interaction. Now kbin. I miss nothing and don't think about it; doing great, thanks for asking;)

[–] feef@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

I mean would definitely consider Reddit and lemmy social media.

[–] treadful@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 years ago

I wouldn't. There's no social graph and I'm not social with any of you bastards.

[–] criitz@reddthat.com 7 points 2 years ago

I don't use any social media. Unless you count Lemmy but I don't think that's the same thing, we are anonymous here and I'm not posting pictures or statuses about my personal life.

In any case, social media like Facebook insta etc are doable without. The only regret I have is not having as much contact with extended family as I used to on Facebook.

[–] Whisper06@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 years ago

I’ve quit pretty much everything but this. People that I want to be able to contact me have my number.

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 6 points 2 years ago

I was never on it...

Lemmy is my first social media because it's not driven by big tech.

[–] jacktherippah@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

I quit mainstream social media so that's good. But now I'm using Lemmy and Mastodon.....

[–] BruceTwarzen@kbin.social 6 points 2 years ago

What do you think happens? Your head doesn't explode when you're not on social media.

[–] AgentGrimstone@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

No, not all of them. I can't not use places like this or Youtube.

[–] Albinjose7345@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Sorry... i didn't understand. What you mean ?

[–] DrDominate@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

Lemmy is social media. YouTube is social media too

[–] LegionEris@feddit.nl 4 points 2 years ago

No, but Lemmy is usually the only one I use irresponsibly. My Instagram and discord use is mostly genuine personal and professional connections. I'll interact with some real bullshit on here.

[–] themurphy@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

It's very doable. Life without is basically just your life with more hours in your day.

[–] qyron@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 years ago

Joined FB to keep in touch with some people. At some point got bored. Deleted the account.

Youtube is a video platform, not a social network.

Joined Reddit out of curiosity. Deleted the account.

Tried Imgur. Left.

Now experiencing Lemmy.

I can live without social media.

[–] RIP_Cheems@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Not really, but I do know roughly how to not only disappear from the internet, but also from run away from your current life, or in other words, to disappear off the face of the earth.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Lemmy is the only one I use enough to count. I have a mastodon account for my author name that I do one post a day on, and that's it.

Also, it's thought, not thinked. One of those weird English conjugations that don't make sense.

[–] Albinjose7345@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)
[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 years ago

No need to apologize! English is weird like that, it's such an easy thing to not know. Just figured that since I prefer a correction when I foul up what little other language I know, it might be a welcome thing to others as well :)

[–] Taigagaai@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I see lots of people replying here that yes, it is in fact easy but how do you people get invited to things?

The only way people in my social circle organise gatherings is via facebook. I tried leaving facebook a few years ago but only one or two of my friends remembered to send a separate invite to me. So I missed everything they were not invited to.

[–] Fal@yiffit.net 3 points 2 years ago

You have friends?

[–] jol@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 years ago

Usually my Telegram friends group, or a WhatsApp group for the event. But often texted directly too.

[–] TheInsane42@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Had twitter, deleted an account twice (1st time as I was fed up with it, 2nd time I still didn't see the use of it and Musk bought it)

Have fb, didn;t use it for years, wanted to delete account but 'due to EU law change you must choose between targeted ads or subscription of €12.99 a month before you have acces tto your account'. There is no option to delete without either coonsent or paying. (So it'll either linger forever of finally get deleted)

Have Reddit, still check in from time to time in 3 game related subs, ditched the rest.

Have Discord account, but again only game related.

Lemmy is the only account I have that's closest to 'random social', rest, is either topic specific or ignored.

Reddit is PC only (browser), Lemmy is small reading tablet only, discord is pc and mobile, as I run 1 server for a game related team I'm leader of. Only personal mentiones may give a silent notification.

Can you live without socials: I'd say yeah. The random sewer socials (FB/xitter) are ditched here, what's active I see more as fora then social media.

Are you sure? Just took the chance and deleted my deactivated account without any hick-ups.

[–] Albinjose7345@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 years ago

I quit playing games as i have no benefits over it.

[–] intensely_human@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago

I really should. I spend far too much time here
