A boycott targeting Loblaw is gaining momentum online, with what could be thousands of shoppers taking their money elsewhere in May.

Easy solution, regulate, and break up loblaws to is original brands.

:lazer-eyes: or bring them under public ownership

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I still don’t understand how it’s legal to just buy your competition. Like every merger should just be illegal if the two companies are in the same industry.

[–] Prezhotnuts@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 months ago

Because our competition bureau has no teeth.

[–] guyrocket@kbin.social 41 points 7 months ago

I am glad to see this. Consumers need MORE of this kind of thing. Punish these businesses that are punishing us.

Maybe a true consumers union someday?

I preferred the first annual steal from Loblaw flyer, but this is also good.

National Roblaws Day πŸŽ‰

Bob's probably gonna write about this on his law blog

[–] Ashyr@sh.itjust.works 6 points 7 months ago

He recorded this misstep his law blog’s flaw log.

They deserve the notoriety.

I know I'm actively moving from No Frills to Calgary Coop. More expensive but so far way better quality foods and no more dollars going to Loblaws.

[–] investorsexchange@lemmy.ca 6 points 7 months ago

And, if they do end up with excess profits, they pay it back to Co-op members.

What stores should we be using as an alternative to loblaws? They own almost everything in my area

[–] asg101@lemmy.ca 18 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

There's an App for that:

https://www.altgrocery.ca/

I have not used it myself, YMMV.

[–] thatsnothowyoudoit@lemmy.ca 7 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Thanks. Added my local independent grocer.

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Isn't there a loblaw store literally called that?

[–] LeFantome@programming.dev 8 points 7 months ago (1 children)

It is called β€œYour Independent Grocer”. So, pretty much.

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 7 points 7 months ago (1 children)

That's so deceitful. Loblaw is also one of those cashiers must stand up or die places. When I worked there they banned water bottles at the tills because they looked unprofessional or so they claimed. At the time I attempted malicious compliance by bringing like 6 of the excepted store brand bottles but in hindsight I was just filling myself with micro plastics.

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I can't think of any grocers in Canada that provides stools/chairs for their cashiers, have you seen one?

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 months ago

I've never actually verified it myself, but I recall some of the cashiers I worked with before talking about a competitor that had adjustable height tills with what was described as a horizontal fat metal tube bolted on one side of the worker compartment as a seat. I'm not sure how many things in that area that are still the same as back then, apart from the loblaws superstore which I know is still there.

[–] TheFeatureCreature@lemmy.world 10 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (4 children)

I'll believe it when I see it. Despite there being plenty of options in my area, the parking lots of Loblaw's stores are still overflowing with cars. I was driving around the city yesterday taking care of some errands and I drove past several stores and they were absolutely packed. One even had a lineup of cars to enter the parking lot that was overflowing out onto the road.

[–] lautan@lemmy.ca 11 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I'm joining in. You should too.

Way ahead of you. I haven't shopped at a Loblaw's location in years.

[–] asg101@lemmy.ca 9 points 7 months ago

It is not May yet, the boycott has not started.

[–] slurpyslop@kbin.social 3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

wouldn't it be a more effective protest to drive there, park, spend 3 hours browsing the aisles, before finally buying a single pint of milk

[–] wahming@monyet.cc 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Not really. The herd mentality means some people will see a crowd and follow. But since they don't know what's going on, they'll just become an extra customer.

[–] slurpyslop@kbin.social 4 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

sounds like there's already a crowd?

also, how many times have you decided to visit a food store because it was busy?

[–] wahming@monyet.cc -3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

also, how many times have you decided to visit a food store because it was busy?

Very, very often as a matter of fact. Have you never gotten curious and decided to check out a place because it was packed to the brim day after day?

[–] slurpyslop@kbin.social 5 points 7 months ago (2 children)

a restaurant, maybe

a grocery store, what?

[–] Someone@lemmy.ca 3 points 7 months ago

I've gone into a grocery store and left after filling up my cart because the line was comically long. Who would ever voluntarily go to a busier grocery store? I wish there were still 24hr grocery options so I could go in the middle of the night when it's quiet.

[–] wahming@monyet.cc 0 points 7 months ago

This might be cultural. But at least in Asia, if there's an unusual sized crowd somewhere, some people will join in just to see what's going on. Sales, festival, public show, etc.

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 2 points 7 months ago

I've worked at one. A lot of people that work there don't have a lot of options, and the shoppers are largely idiots.

[–] howrar@lemmy.ca 7 points 7 months ago

Only May? They're barely going to notice it.

[–] Octospider@lemmy.one 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I'm betting they instead continue to make record profits all through May.

[–] Omega_Haxors@lemmy.ml 2 points 7 months ago

The only time boycotts work is when they're paired up with divestment and sanctions.

[–] rxbudian@lemmy.ca 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

What are the names of the stores? can't avoid them if people don't know the names

This reminds me of all the Facebook led fuel protests ala 2007. None of those were successful btw, fuels still expensive as shit.
