Honestly, I agree with @StillNoLeftLeft@hexbear.net

Ok fair enough, but I wouldn't have installed Linux if I had not seen it recommended.

I'm not a computer toucher, but I can follow written advice.

These sorts of posts always scold anyone giving out actual solutions just so being miserable can continue. This cultural thing almost has an end of history type vibe to it. It's also pretty hostile to divergent and often solution focused neurotypes.

Linux evangelism kinda makes sense, no one is spending billions on marketing and ads for it. I think Linux evangelists should ask about use cases first, instead of just posting a generic "use Linux".

I agree with you, but there is nuance to this topic, just like the OPs image states. Pushing for growth of the community is great and necessary, but inadvertently pushing away users isn’t going to help the community and philosophy. “Btw I use arch” has become derogatory and people outside the joke will have a negative view of all Linux and the seemingly pretentious nature of the community.

Maybe I'm wrong to be, but at this point I'm so burned out on this entire "you're going to lose people" class of argument that my brain immediately rejects and discards them.

Yeah as I was typing that I realized the tone it had and I didn’t appreciate it either.

You have a very valid point because if this conversation was about politics I would be disregarding my own comment lol.

In this situation tho, it seems counterproductive to a community and product that relies heavily on attracting more users and contributors.

so what's the solution. as far as i am aware people on the internet really just be saying shit

[–] nothx@hexbear.net 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think the solution is not being snarky and smug about suggesting the use of Linux. It’s been said plenty in this thread, but understanding the frustration and the persons use case is a good start. Followed by making the suggestion to use open source alternatives for the use cases.

Just saying “lmao use Linux, noob” is the behavior I’m against.

I must not be around the same social media circles. I've seen a few flamewars but honestly there's more comments complaining about "use linux idiot" than actual "use linux idiot" comments. These days I can't be emotionally invested enough in that sort of flame war anymore. Linux is awesome and I just feel sorry for Windows users who desperately cling on to such an oppressive platform.
