Those who were around in the early days of the news megathread may remember Pedro Castillo, the left-leaning leader of Peru who was deposed in December 2022. He was replaced by Dina Boluarte, the first woman to be President of Peru, who described herself as a progressive but afterwards routinely sided with Peruvian conservatives and American interests. To say she was unpopular is an understatement of titanic proportions - she descended to such lows that she was, at one point, the single most unpopular leader on the planet. As with most deeply unpopular leaders that side with the West, she kept power for a bafflingly long time.
However, on October 10th, after a period of protests against the government, she was impeached and removed by Peru's Congress in a unanimous vote. José Jerí was sworn in as the new President, who was previously the President of the Congress and is a member of a centrist Peruvian party. The government is trying the classic strategy: keep doing the same thing as before, and sacrifice an unpopular figure - here, Boluarte - in the hopes that this appeases the crowd.
Is this strategy working? It doesn't really seem to be - protests are not only continuing, but strengthening, as it is clear that neoliberalism will not reformed and the brutality by police will not stop (there was very recently a high-profile case in which a musician, Mauricio Ruiz, was murdered). Controversies surrounding Jerí, including allegations of SA, are already being reported. If Jerí is deposed, the next person in line to try their hand at ruling will be the former army general Roberto Chiabra, who would be the ninth President in less than a decade.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict
Sources:
Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.
Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

This whole thing is so dumb. What do they expect to accomplish? Chavismo is built on the basis of very real racial and class divisions in Venezuelan society. They can't decapitate the regime and expect to be able to install a puppet. They're not going to invade and occupy the capitol. They might be able to destroy the Venezuelan Navy and Air Force and occupy the main oil producing region, but that itself would be an Iraq-war scale effort and I don't think they have the will to expend those kind of resources. I just can't figure out what they're really planning here. Do they want to do a strike like they did on Iran with no real strategic impact just for show? We're seeing a fair number of these 'nothing ever happens' mini-wars like the recent exchange between India and Pakistan. The extreme violence in Ukraine and Palestine is showing people that you can have a little war as a treat and nothing will come of it. It's like we're playing Hearts of Iron and world tension is a real thing.
Maybe we have to look at the internal politics of the Trump administration. Hegseth has really got a grip on the War Department and Rubio at State wants to throw the Gusanos a bone and this is what these idiots have come up with and there's just no sane figure with enough backbone in the government to stand up and say 'this is fucking crazy, this will not work, all we can do is create chaos and uncertainty and embarrass ourselves, possibly ruining our geopolitical position in Latin America permanently'. To be fair that's a hard case to make, look at how much the Arab nations have debased themselves allowing Israel to commit genocide with absolute impunity. These assholes then take a look at Latin America and see no military power with any experience or real competence able to stand up to them at all and think they can bully the right into power wherever they want. Are they right? I'm not so sure.
Part of the deal throughout the Cold War was that military conflicts never escalated beyond internal repression, direct US intervention was limited, and no one had to worry about a big war. If the US goes and gets one going they'll force the whole continent to respond, and given the current global climate and long-term geopolitical trajectory I don't think the response will be favorable to the US.
I think this is all Rubio. He truly wants to end Maduro, and I wouldn’t put it past him to try and do something similar to Cuba before 2029. I have a theory that he was in cahoots with the Nobel committee to make sure Trump didn’t raise too much of a fuss so long as his boss babe gusano got it instead.
There’s actually quite a parallel between Blinken/Biden and Rubio/Trump. In both situations, the president is a doddering, sundowning idiot but the SoS’ know just how to play them like a fiddle to get what they want. Biden was a Zionist down to his dark soul and wanted to go down in history as Israel’s best friend, and Blinken was able to use this in order to get Biden to sign off on literal genocide. Blinken’s ultimate goal was to see the complete eradication of Hamas, even if it meant killing everyone in Gaza to make it happen.
While I’m not entirely sure how Rubio is able to manipulate Trump, he’s at least savvy to know how to play to his ego. It was (darkly) brilliant to link Maduro to “narco-terrorism” in Trump’s brain. It makes him feel like he’s being tough on drugs, terrorism, and socialism all at once. I also think the people around Trump (especially Miller) are feeding him a constant diet of AI-generated videos and telling him it’s what’s actually happening.
They want to do the Libya model, but don't want to do the work of actually arming Al Qaeda and ISIS equivalents on the ground. So I guess they will do some random bombings and hope the country just falls apart?
Why not? War is the next logical step when capitalist profit rates starts to crumble
It won't be an Iraq war sized effort or occupation, more of a US invasion of Panama sized effort, if it happens. This is definitely planned by Marco Rubio, and whoever is doing the planning at the lower level seems to be taking notes from H.W Bush's strategy.
