An American civil rights group on Friday called on the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner to renounce her support for Zionism and fascism, including over her links to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political party and right-wing groups in Europe.

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair) said that they “strongly disagree” with the Nobel Prize committee’s decision to award the prize to Maria Corina Machado, who they said “delivered remarks at a conference of European fascists, including Geert Wilders and Marie Le Pen, which openly called for a new Reconquista, referencing the ethnic cleansing of Spanish Muslims and Jews in the 1500s”.

It also just feels weird to make a choice that itself is likely to promote war. Trump is seemingly too stupid to immediately capitalize on this, but raising Venezuela's dictatorship up to being the most important dictatorship in the world and then praising someone in favor of military intervention by a country currently trying to spark a war for repressive purposes seems incredibly irresponsible for a committee seeking to promote "peace".

It is honestly a shockingly myopic call from them, I agree

She's a mouthpiece for the corrupt ollgarchy that ran Venezuela before Chavez took over. She's kissing Bolsonaro's and Trump's asses in hopes that they might help make her Venezuela's Pinochet.

And the Nobel Committee can do one.

Well, Venezuela has fuckloads of oil that isn't going to the USA, so...

Hence why if trump was smart enough to capitalize, he’d be invading the country by now. She’s giving him the green light

And the Nobel committee is sanctifying her as a saint of peace and democracy and her positions as inherently moral.

It seems like a very classical liberal move to shy away from outright embracing the fascists, but thinking if they just support them where their interests converge they can guide them from the shadows to deal with their problems.

She's supposedly an opposition leader trying to jumpstart democracy, yet she invites external aggression which makes people crazy enough to tear down existing democratic institutions. Her dictatorship is going to crumble so she needed to prop it up with the spectre of US aggression?

I always assumed these cases were somewhat proactive. Here’s someone who said something about peace and is in a position to make it happen. Let’s try to shame them into it
