Last I checked the shows wasn’t science fiction. It was a drama series actually. The first season had subtle hints about the millennium.
Season two was messed up by the writers (it wasn’t Carter, two others I can’t remember) and played into the millennium aspect and made the show “campy”.
Season three Carter returned and had to clean up the mess and close the show because the ratings drop… because of season two.
Had they not played into it so much and screwed up season two the show could have survived and been more interesting and entertaining. Even after 2000…
Not sure the reason for your comment, seems pretty hostile for a simple answer to an asklemmy question. You should take your rage out on someone else.
There’s zero hostility in my comment and Im not sure where you would get it from.
You suggested people dropped the ball on it when factually there was never much interest t begin with. If you were an adult at the time, and Im only saying this because I dont know you, you wouldn’t be surprised that people were reticent to watch anything called “Millennium” in 1999.
I watched it when it originally aired. I guess that makes me an adult or old or a fan that saw the potential.
Factually the show was well received. Factually Chris Carter admitted the show could have been better or done more under different circumstances.
I suggested that Chris Carter and Fox dropped the ball, not “people”.
Not a huge fan of ChatGPT but I’m also really lazy… here are my facts.

What Carter Has Said
Solid ratings and regrets about ending In an interview reflecting on 25 years of Millennium, Carter said: “I think the show could have gone on, and for reasons that I regret, the show did not, but we had very solid ratings that could have carried us on.” eatthecorn.com
Wishing for better production conditions Carter has said that if he were doing the show today (or if things were different), he'd prefer more time and fewer constraints: “You look at television now and people roll out 10‑episode series, and we did 22 episodes a season roughly. […] I think I would look forward to doing a shorter run of the show and being able to write all the scripts before you ever went into production. […] It would be great to have the luxury of not writing while you’re producing and trying to stay one step ahead of this monster, this all-consuming monster who requires you to do way too many jobs at once. That would be a dream come true, and it would make Millennium a better show.” eatthecorn.com
“I pulled the plug on Millennium too soon” In a podcast interview, Carter said: “I pulled the plug on Millennium too soon…” Lemonada Media
On the show’s direction / seasons He’s also said that each season of Millennium felt like a somewhat different show, and that season two was a departure from how he originally envisioned things, which suggests some dissatisfaction with certain narrative or tonal choices. eatthecorn.com
Additionally, as I recall, he made similar comments to the above on the DVD release.
Factually the series high was 17 million people which would be incredible now but was poor for a weekend primetime show not in the premiere episode. The second season premiere is 7-8 million which is not good for the time period in that slot. When I say it wasn't well received Im talking in viewers as that is the only metric that matters to keeping a show on air at that time.
There wasn't much interest considering it was on Fox and it wasn't The Simpsons.
You can twist it anyway you want. At this point I believe you’re just looking to argue with someone and the subject wouldn’t matter.
This has been fun but… it’s getting old and I’m moving on.
If it makes you happy… you win.
Im not arguing? I think you have entirely misread the tone here.
