The people who get angry over graffiti are so weird. I feel like being in a city with no graffiti anywhere would feel really weird and unsettling

I stayed in downtown Denver and right across the street from my hotel where I'd go to catch the bus somebody wrote in sharpie on an electrical box

MY YAMMY IS IN FLORIDE DUH

It was one of the highlights of my trip and I hope it's still there if I ever make it there again

Edit: found a picture

I go either way since graffiti can range between beautiful works of art and some douchebag tagging his local 'crew' name on my neighbors fence.

This one is amusing and definitely gets a pass from me though.

Graffiti should basically always be done on corporate or city property. Anyone tagging personal property is a dick.

Anyone tagging personal property is a ~~dick~~ penis man

If it’s artistic, sure. Even if it said “penis man” in an artful way. But this is as close to art as a adult still drawing stick figures. It’s almost embarrassing we don’t have better vandals in the neighborhood.

In some respects the art is in the act itself, in the rebellion, in defiance, in the declaration that "I was here." Even something as simple as a tag scrawled on a wall that seems illegible to the uninitiated but actually contains complex letterforms like Philly's wickets, or even the simplicity from the great Cornbread himself.

In some ways Penis Man here is more of an artist IMO than anyone who only paints legally, even Sofles level murals.

And he went back over the buff too, props to Penis Man.

It’s a weird thing I see some amazing graffiti here and there. My city actually pays for and has a competition for it…….. but like 99% of it it’s gang tags and neo Nazi’s sadly

[–] turbowafflz@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Interesting, in my area almost all of the graffiti that isn't just random art or names is things like trans flags, acab, free palestine, etc. I don't think I've seen any nazi stuff I recognized

Were I God Emperor of New Jersey, I'm setting aside art money to have graffiti artists liven the place up a bit. A lot? Go wild at the Atlantic City Racetrack maybe.

God Emperor of New Jersey is the Dune spinoff I never knew I needed!
