Ulysses was certainly an American because he was raised by an abolitionist but was himself kinda like shrug-outta-hecks about slavery despite fighting for the union. Literally bought William Jones (his slave) from his father-in-law to build a cabin and then freed him like a year later. Why Ulysses?? Why?!? You could've had an (relatively at least, if you ignore the whole native american/dominican republic portion of his presidency) untarnished

I gotta break out Margaret Kimberly's - Prejudential: Black America and the Presidents book and reread the chapter on him.
