4:04 ET: NYT: Old man in custody is NOT actually the shooter. The police have determined that a person who was taken into custody after the shooting was not actually the shooter, according to Scott Trotter, a university spokesman. The university had earlier said a suspect was in custody, and videos online showed an older man being detained by police officers. As much as I hate to admit it, this is actually really bad

[–] CrawlMarks@hexbear.net 12 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

It was already really bad. I don't think this will make anything worse. I mean, they would love to, bud there isn't much more momentum to add here

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 7 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

Political assassinations happening more frequently is like, really bad. The rights response to this will be to double down on extremist rhetoric.

There's no offramp here and it doesn't end well

[–] glimmer_twin@hexbear.net 18 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

There are no communists anywhere near public figure status in America. While I disagree with campaigns of political assassination as a tactic, if people start killing politicians in America they’ll literally only be killing right wingers, just statistically speaking.

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 6 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Private individuals can also be the target of stochastic terror, all fun and games until someone guns down your local food not bombs

[–] glimmer_twin@hexbear.net 12 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Do we really think there wasn’t a decent chance of that in America before this happened? There’s right wing terror over there constantly. They have a whole government dedicated to it.

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 7 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Of course but it's not like it's a binary, like we weren't going to do terror but then Kirk gets killed and now we will. It's about the deterioration of stability, about the normalization of violence and the desensitization of the public to violent rhetoric. These are the cracks in the gear. Without repair they compound and the tooth breaks loose.

I certainly agree with you that it’s real years of lead hours in the US. I just think the violence has been there. If you’re black in America political terror has been happening to you for literal centuries. Gaza, also an American product. Mass shootings every day for decades. Someone already tried to kill trump twice and got real close. Luigi of course.

It kinda feels like the ship sailed on political violence. I’m not sure how that genie gets put back in the bottle at this point. Political violence IS America.

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 6 points 9 hours ago

Good take, and I had a similar thought listening to one of the thumb cops at the press conference bemoan that this is where 250 years of American history has led us. Like yes, obviously, this is a genocidal settler colonial state, political violence is in its DNA. What's coming is the chickens coming home to roost. That doesn't mean I want to hang around for it

[–] MolotovHalfEmpty@hexbear.net 5 points 9 hours ago

The violence in American culture is a cancer that's eating it alive. And for a long time access to money and power helped you protect yourself, isolate yourself from it - whether via security or privacy or your potential enemies having too much too lose - but cancer spreads until it consumed everything if you don't actually fight it. It's nothing new, nothing that wasn't tearing at the majority of the country. It's just spreading to the minority of people who thought it wouldn't spread to them.

[–] Formerlyfarman@hexbear.net 5 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

No, all these people should go the way of the Romanovs. Politics is fundamentally violence, it's fine as long as your side wins the debate. Today the fascist lost.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

They are already teying to go full nazi.

[–] CrawlMarks@hexbear.net 7 points 10 hours ago

That has been a thing for a long time. This event isn't going to be the last straw

[–] Mardoniush@hexbear.net 8 points 10 hours ago

Maybe, though if the killer is right wing, maybe a Fuentes fan, that could lead down some fun roads.

[–] anarchoilluminati@hexbear.net 6 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Megamind dying or reactionaries not shutting up?

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 6 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

The latter clearly, the former is profoundly enjoyable

[–] anarchoilluminati@hexbear.net 3 points 11 hours ago

Thought so, just curious!
