Why was it called "no kings"? That always struck me a stupid name created by people who probably voted for hillary/biden in their primaries.
We should be saying "no rulers" or "no oligarchs."
As usual, neo-libs miss the mark because they can't comprehend how their politicians are also part of the problem.
This is a lesson on marketing. "No Kings" rolls off the tongue. Monarchy invokes autocracy/dictatorship, it's an easy transition into connecting that it's the opposite of democracy.
"Rulers" kind of include democratically elected ones. "Oligarchs" are too targeted and a big word. And like you said, there are other problems too.
What's why "Fake News" and "Make America Great Again" worked so well. Simple and stupid, an elementary schooler can read it. And have enough ambiguity that they can be interpreted however the listener wants to.
The organization had tried other slogans for their protests, none brought out more people like "No Kings". Give people what they want I guess.
Yeah. I wish we could get these kinda numbers on a more targeted kinda thing, rather than just "orange man bad," but I guess I'll take what we can get lol
At the time it first came out, that was a popular slogan. Its the idea that Trump wants to make himself king of the U.S.A., so its an anti-trump and pro democracy slogan.
Its been a minute since I was active in that space, but I imagine it is the functioning national parts of the 50501 and similar progressive liberal resistance movements that Our Revolution PAC is putting their resources into.
When I was involved, I wouldn't have called them neoliberal. The mass current was mostly progressive liberal, with militant radical elements on one side pushing no work with police, recognition of Palestinian genocide; and the other side being quite conservative, sort of "a lot of MAGAs are angry too!" who pushed for depoliticization and police collaboration. There were some genuine socialist radicals fighting on a national level, and winning ground. Also lots of local radicals like PSL and various abolitionist anarchists on the local level fighting for their communities and providing education.
The character is more like liberal social democrat, if I had to judge the first no kings protest. But things have likely changed since then.
oddly it was the other way around. "no oligarchs" was something that conservatives dismissed as a liberal thing. So no kings was more to the point and didn't have liberal connotations.
Yeah, libs are the problem that “no kings” protests against! Thanks, Obama
The people voting against the working class are the problem.
