Unpaid work is slavery, full stop.
Especially when being forced to work.
If I was only getting paid while in the air, you bet your ass I would have been sitting on my ass doing nothing, plus reporting their asses if the company wasn't giving on call pay. I imagine this would get you fired for insubordination pretty quickly.
