I find this deeply disturbing and wish I had not seen it. Not sure why exactly in terms of underlying ethics but there is a sharp reason somewhere in there that tingles at my intuition.
That's "The Martyrdom of Saint Vitus." If it makes you feel better, he survives this as well as many other tortures. His associates, the two mourners, are Modestus and Crecentia.
So their thoughts and prayers worked?
Survived being put in a furnace 🤔
Also boiled in oil and fed to lions before finally dying only after escaping the Romans.
Oh, my first thought was cremation. Makes more sense, as the guy doesn't look very dead.
So a dude got maimed horribly by dark-ages torturers and survived long enough for witnesses to go "Holy shit, he's still alive??" and then stories spread about it.
I hate it here.
The one to be baked has a halo, so he probably had it coming.
That is scary fascist
Is that a halo or a pizza?
Depictions of medieval torture bothers me deeply also, the knowledge that we as a species have no inherent, hardwired value for lives of others to the degree that people devised the most horrific ways to inflict unimaginable suffering on others for thousands of years... and the knowledge that we are the same creature as them, our brains are identical, they weren't inhuman monsters, they were the same as you and me, the only thing keeping us from going back to flaying people and sawing them in half as slowly as possible is cultural standards and our flimsiest education system, which is currently dying in many parts of the world.
We seem to have some basic instincts that prevent us from doing harm to other humans even if we don't know them.
Military and fascists have to go to extreme lengths to de-hunanize their opponents so their pawns inflict maximum damage regardless of instincts.
In the same way that nature documentaries do all they can to anthromopo.... ahh I don't have a dictionary, I mean assign human traits to non-human animals so we feel extra sad or happy for them.
