It doesn’t matter if it’s valid or not aussies will turn anything into a nickname

Nope. We usually shorten the last name instead if it doesn't roll off the tongue easily. Or we name them after a beloved fictional character, eg. jimbob.

Yeah I've heard jim-o before but I wouldn't say it's super common, things either end in 'oh' or 'ie' to roll off the tongue nicely so jimmie is usually the norm.
