yeah this, a lot of subreddits i followed didn't have an alternative on lemmy, so i did what others did as well and made my own version of the subreddit here on lemmy. if anything this makes sense, if we want lemmy and the threadiverse in general to be a true alternative to the social media giant that reddit is, we have to recreate the communities which many redditors called home so that it's a lot easier for them to switch there for good, although i don't mean recreating reddit social wise, aka reddit's userbase, but rather the environment and ecosystem of communities that reddit has, and that makes reddit a social hotspot for the world wide web. yeah it sounds impossible, but if enough users get together we might be able to get close to reddit's position, which could be a powerful place to be in
I refuse to call it the "Threadiverse" I feel like it gives Meta a valid place here, and frankly? They can get themselves well and truly to fuck.
Other than that one point of contention, absolutely agree. If broader use and acceptance as an alternative is what we want as a community, we need to have these niche spaces that places like Reddit currently have the bogart on.
Just keep in mind that with the 50k monthly active users we have, niche communities will have a hard time to stay active.
It's usually recommended to try to regroup with a few other posters on a more generic communities. There are regular threads about this on !fedigrow@lemm.ee
oh okay, thanks for the info!
You're welcome, good luck again!
Yeah, I recently created !beetlejuicing@lemm.ee for similar reasons.
I like taking things like AbsoluteUnits and making our own version. What I never want is bringing the in-jokes from reddit eg I want a community about black fathers to actually be about fatherhood instead of a racist joke, I never want to hear about Jolly Ranchers, the swamps of dagobah et al
well absolute units is it's own version, and yeah it's stated in the rules that posting fat people as absolute units is not allowed (except celebrities, but i'm looking to change that rule and making it banned in general)
Im 100% supportive of banning fat hate.
