How many of those orders are Americans trying to get around import restrictions and tariffs?
In Japan, they are selling a Japanese language only model that is cheaper than the international version. Any Americans that don’t understand that and try to get around the tariffs are likely to be disappointed.
I was considering purchase a Japanese switch 2 because my Japanese is decent enough for most gaming but then I saw it was region locked pretty hard so I can’t use any of my us e shop purchases. Plus fuck Nintendo, even without the tariffs the price on this thing is a bit much and their behavior is garbage
If I ever do get one it’ll be because someone broke theirs and I got it cheap as fuck and fixed it. That’s how I got my switch, had a busted battery management IC and a fucked usb C port. I think in total I paid like $90 for it with parts. It would also help if the console was exploited for piracy
I have never lost a bet that depends on my fellow Americans being disappointed because they failed to understand something.
None, they’re hardware region locked because they didn’t want scalpers buying up the cheaper Japanese units and selling them elsewhere. I believe manufacturing is split between regions as well, though I’m not sure to what degree.
Region locking can be dodged of you plan to buy region locked games, use a VPN.
JP Switches will only play Japanese-language games. So for non-Japanese-speaking consumers, that will be a problem.
Also all the menus will be in japanese too.
How many scalpers, also?
I think the tariffs might actually have one niche benefit of mitigating scalping. It's going to be even more expensive for scalpers to get their hands on an actual product now, and people are already struggling to justify the increased retail costs, as it is. I'd have to imagine it'll be much harder for scalpers to find a buyer these days, as anybody who can afford scalpers' fees plus tariffs likely wouldn't have any issue getting their hands on one, to begin with.
I don't think it will effect scalping in the slightest, just lokm at how GPU prices skyrocketed and scalping was even worse of a problem. The scarcity increases demand and therefore increases how much they can charge.
Potentially.
I thought you couldn’t get in the lottery without an account for 12 months? I would assume they would know the geolocation of the account and only say the Japanese accounts in this.
It’s still got to get it to the US. You can’t circumvent Tarrifs unless you buy the item outside the country and lie at the border.
Buying elsewhere means when it hits your local customs, you pay the increase there.
