Gretchen Whitmer responds to calls by some Democrats to vote ‘uncommitted’ in Michigan’s primary on Tuesday

Gretchen Whitmer, the Michigan governor, pushed back on calls to not vote for Joe Biden over his handling of the Israel-Gaza conflict, saying on Sunday that could help Trump get re-elected.

“It’s important not to lose sight of the fact that any vote that’s not cast for Joe Biden supports a second Trump term,” she said on Sunday during an interview on CNN’s State of the Union. “A second Trump term would be devastating. Not just on fundamental rights, not just on our democracy here at home, but also when it comes to foreign policy. This was a man who promoted a Muslim ban.”

Whitmer, who is a co-chair of Biden’s 2024 campaign, also said she wasn’t sure what to expect when it came to the protest vote.

Rashida Tlaib, a Democrat who is the only Palestinian-American serving in Congress, urged Democrats last week to vote “uncommitted” in Michigan’s 27 February primary.

And yet again, a concern troll boiling down both candidates to “genocide guy”.

I can’t see these kinds of comments as anything other than “both sides are the same” in an attempt to get people to not vote.

Let me ask a simple question: Will you vote for Biden in the next election, or do you choose to support Trump through not voting, or worse voting for him?

[–] Count042@lemmy.ml 2 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

If they're not the same on the topic of genocide, who do I vote for to stop genocide?

Your whole post, and that of most of the idiots pushing this "You have to vote for Biden" line of bullshit always seem to make the same mistake.

I can’t see these kinds of comments as anything other than “both sides are the same” in an attempt to get people to not vote.

I don't give a shit how people vote, and I'm not going to try and influence anyone else's vote. I'm not a Russian bot, and I don't get money from the CCP.

Put simply, I'm an individual that won't vote for genocide. It's a red line. When I say that there are lots of others out there like me, I'm not trying to influence anything. I'm stating a very simple truth.

There a lots, probably enough to cost an election, of people that won't cross that red line.

It's especially true in Michigan where a requisite part of the coalition that is required for a Democratic win is of an ethnicity/religion that heavily identifies with the population being genocided.

When you read people stating this, stop thinking of it as some foreign operation trying to shape opinion, and recognize it for what it is. The simple truth, that people who don't want Trump to be president, are trying to get the DNC to recognize.

Joe Biden loses. As a consequence of his own actions.

You can hate that fact. You can rail against the people who have genocide as a red line, and call them all sorts of things like purists, or idiots or whatever.

In the end, it's just you blaming others for the consequences of one mans Hubris that they aren't responsible for.

If you don't want Trump to win, you'd better start pushing for a better Democratic candidate, rather than trying to justify genocide.

[–] KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Yeah, all I’m hearing when I read this is “I won’t vote for either candidate, and I’m going to pretend that doesn’t help Trump.”

[–] Count042@lemmy.ml 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Biden won Michigan by 11k votes.

Biden chose to give the next election to Trump so he could help Israel commit genocide.

[–] KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 9 months ago (1 children)

It’s quite clear you have no idea what you’re talking about.

[–] Count042@lemmy.ml 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

How do you think Biden wins Michigan?

[–] KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Can you explain to me how this isn’t a crazy conspiracy theory being pushed by a ~~foreign operative~~ nut job?

[–] Count042@lemmy.ml 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

There is no single 'nut job' pushing anything. It is simply being aware of current demographic trends in Michigan, and knowing that Biden won Michigan by only 11k votes.

I don't need to listen to someone else to decide what my opinions are. I'm capable of looking at objective data, and drawing conclusions for myself. Lots of Michigan state DNC members, including the one that screamed the loudest that Clinton was going to lose are raising the same warnings about this election.

God, you're so brain rotted by living in a bubble and blaming a foreign power for everything you literally are incapable of analyzing data yourself, if it leads to a conclusion you don't like.

That is a really really bad place to be.

[–] KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

No, Biden did not win the Michigan primary by 11k. Do you know how numbers work? Your image even shows the numbers. Where do you see 11k?

He won with ~623k votes, which represented just over 81% of the total votes. Contrast that to 2020, in which he won with just over 840k votes, or just shy of 53%.

I am shocked… that you’ve managed to double down on your ignorance, when you’re literally providing the contrary information in your initial comment.

As for the rest of your comment, I think it’s quite obvious you’re incapable of coming to correct conclusions. If you’re doing basic math and coming out with incorrect answers? God help you.

[–] Count042@lemmy.ml 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Then blame the person responsible, or feel good about supporting genocide, and child murder.

[–] KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (2 children)

You’re making a choice either way. Your vote, or lack thereof, directly helps choose the next president.

The reason the trolly problem exists is to show that morality isn’t some easily answered question. But it applies perfectly here.

Any choice you make results in support for Israel. Literally any choice, including “no choice” which is still a choice. So you have to ask yourself, if all roads lead to that specific thing still happening, should you not vote to protect the things that are still possible? Or should you throw LGBTQ+ individuals, drag queens, reproductive rights, and more under the bus?

[–] Count042@lemmy.ml 1 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

How very intersectional of you.

You also missed the entire point of my post. Yelling 'vote harder' at the people who are disgusted with genocide who engage in political discussions online won't be more than a drop in the bucket in comparison to the people who aren't terminally online and are disgusted by genocide so they don't vote.

Your guy Biden is throwing the election to Trump, and you're blaming everyone but him.

Good job.

You're also setting the stage for blaming leftists for his failure, thus ensuring the further right wing drift of the DNC.

Good job.

I'm also 43, every single election I've heard the same exact argument from the DNC. Every. Single. Election.

And nothing changes.

You know the definition of insanity? That's the DNC.

[–] bigMouthCommie@kolektiva.social 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

consequentialist views of ethics literally say ends justify means.

the right thing is not to support genocide. there are two candidates who won't: Jill Stein and cornel West

[–] KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 9 months ago

And when you can’t vote for them in the general election without writing them in, and throwing away your vote?

[–] kttnpunk@lemmy.world 0 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

Both candidates are establismentarian ASF and represent the oligarchs FAR more than any everyday American. I am not a "concern troll" I'm a leftist with concerns and I'll be voting third party, (most likely green) as a matter of principle. I've done this my entire adult life- you aren't changing my mind in a million years. I legitimately think he's too old, too right-wing, and too corrupt. Dude should just be running as a Republican tbqh.

[–] DarkGamer@kbin.social 0 points 9 months ago (1 children)

You're working against your own interests. Reminds me of the fake "walk away" movement that the right was trying to invent/push last cycle.

[–] kttnpunk@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

No, the democrats are doing exactly that by sticking with Biden- instead of a combative, progressive anti-trump agenda we get Trump's agenda either way. He has been AWFUL on the border and not much better on climate change. His VP is a transphobic cop. He curbstomped Bernie sander's movement through friends in high places and ruined our chance at a decent healthcare system all the while constantly appealing to the right. Let me hate the guy ffs

[–] DarkGamer@kbin.social -1 points 9 months ago

If you can't tell the difference between Biden and Trump's agendas you aren't looking very hard.

You can hate who you want, but I believe your emotions are misplaced. Biden was elected to be center-left, to provide stability, to defeat Trump. One has to cast a wide net of appeal to be elected. Sorry you didn't get everything you want, but that's better than getting the opposite of what you want.
