The apk could be released outside of Google and its policies. They could even open source it.

Similar experience except I also contributed. A lot. No notification, just one day my posts never got comments or votes anymore. Filing multiple appeals has had no effect. I think I'm done. What a sleazy way to treat your active users (4 years, 13k karma).
