While on trail, Taghi ordered and succeeded in the murder of:

  • the crown witness' innocent brother,
  • the crown witness' lawyer, Derk Wiersum,
  • investigative journalist, Dutch celebrity and confidant of the crown witness, Peter R. de Vries.

This level of violence aimed at innocents was unheard of in the Netherlands. It's what drug trafficking brings.

It's what people with too much power brings.

These guys saw their wealth was threatened, so they spent some of it to protect it.

The solution is to make sure these people don't have enough excess wealth to spend it how they do.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Three members of a drug cartel involved in a series of gangland killings have been jailed for life, in the biggest criminal trial in Dutch history.

Heavily armed police stood guard outside the building, wearing body armour and balaclavas as surveillance drones buzzed overhead.

The court noted it was significant that none of the surviving relatives of the gang's victims made use of the right to speak or submitted a claim as an injured party, such is the fear and vulnerability they still feel.

Nabil B was found guilty of being complicit and an accessory to murder, but handed a lesser sentence of 10 years due to personal circumstances and the role he played in bringing his former accomplices to justice.

A week after it became public knowledge, in early 2018, that Nabil B had turned informant and cut a deal with prosecutors as a key witness, his brother was shot dead.

Then, in July 2021, his confidante, the investigative journalist Peter R de Vries, was shot on a summer evening after leaving a TV studio in central Amsterdam.
