I rented one of the big 75 foot ones from Home Depot to clear a branch drain. The sound it made of all that nasty water rushing out as soon as I cleared it almost made up for the smell I had to endure... almost. But the rental was $81 versus the $750 I paid a plumber for a similar job in the past.

God bless plumbers. Really tho. I've had to bust out the ol' drain snake before and it's one of the most disgusting tasks in a home. I'm almost more comfortable with plunging a shit laden toilet than pulling out the diabolical monstrosities one can find in a shower drain. But that satisfying sound of water actually going through the pipe is a sure sign that your days of showering in ankledeep water are behind and you hits a special part of the rewards center of the brain.
This one wasn’t so bad actually — almost satisfying.
We gave our cat a bath a few weeks ago (she got carsick in her crate on the way home from the vet — the bath was justified), so it was mostly matted up cat hair causing the blockage.
It looked horrendous but didn’t have any smell which sets me off way more.
What's really fun is when you have cast iron pipes that like to flake rust with age and the flakes catch hair. Then you find yourself yanking out years worth of hair and can see which shades of hair dye previous homeowners have used.
We bought the place from an elderly lady so I guess I should have expected that.
Instructions unclear; snake is lost. Should I add a mouse to retrieve the snake?
I would go with a badger.

I just throw a cat toy in the tub and they'll end up pulling all the hair out of the drain. Need to earn their keep somehow.
My cats do not like the tub.
The one used to sit between the shower curtains on the edge of the tub while I showered as a kitten. He fell in once and never did that again.
Edit: also when we got him neutered he had diarrhea, but with the cone he couldn’t clean properly and got it all over his fur. We had to bathe him and he’s hated the tub since.
Mine loves it. If you don't actively lock him out, he'll be in there playing in the water. He'll crawl in and stand in the shower with you. And then proceed to make a mess everywhere if you don't catch him quick enough to dry him off with a towel. He's a decent plumber tho.
