Dutch mayors are increasingly implementing emergency measures that reportedly restrict citizens’ rights, such as preventive searches and bans on gatherings, according to NOS data.

In 2012, seven such measures were active in six municipalities; this year, 77 decisions were recorded across 38 municipalities, including extensions.

"These measures have become almost standard,” said Jan Brouwer, law professor at the University of Groningen. “For longer periods, anyone walking in these areas can be searched, even someone taking their dog for a walk.”

Imagine going for a regular stroll and suddenly you need to show your ID and are frisked (sometimes followed). It's not a nice experience, and you can write off your relaxing walk.

Well, for some (secure) areas it does make more sense, like with airports & drone incidents etc.

@HowRu68 almost like the U.S. with #ICE in the "border zones" or 100 mi/160 km from the borders of Mexico or Canada. Authoritarian creep is a danger to all western democracies.

Authoritarian creep is a danger to all western democracies.

Exactly.. A danger to people in general. Never came across people who lived under a dictatorship who felt free, happy or without having lost friends & family to the regime.

Sometimes there are apologists though, but that's a imo a trauma induced coping strategy or they were collaborating (often under some life or death threat).
