Just last week GNOME's Nautilus file manager "GNOME Files" made headlines for finally supporting Ctrl+INsert and Shift+Insert while this week there is more activity worth pointing out. Nautilus in GNOME 50 will be loading thumbnail images much faster than in prior versions.

With new thumbnail code merged this week for GNOME Files / Nautilus, the file manager is now making use of improvements in GTK4 and now allowing thumbnails to be loaded asynchronously.

First thing I did when I tried GNOME was replace nautilus with nemo. Then I started adding extensions as time passed to finally realize that I spent too much time recreating KDE with extensions that broke all the time.

That's nice, can we please have column view now?

Is column view the macOS style?

I'd never seen column view but I just looked up pictures and man that seems like it'd be really helpful for my ADHD and poor working memory, its so easy to get lost trying to keep track of what level of nested folder you're in.

And it'd be so nice to just be able to jump laterally instead of navigating up and then going to a different folder

Its a shame now I want something gnome devs will never provide. Maybe someday an independent dev will get tired and build a nice alternative. Perhaps I'll try a different file manager and use a theme

Nautilus already features the tree-view as an option which lets you "jump" laterally, it's in the preferences as "Expandable Folders in List View". Personally i prefer moving up and down the file hierarchy, you have less information to process and you can navigate with the mouse button shortcuts.

I'll take the faster loading thumbnails instead, thanks.

Great, can we please have a sane sort by system?
