Do you have any attachment to life?
Jigokuraku/Hell’s Paradise was one of my favorite seasonals in 2023, and one I felt went overlooked compared to the other MAPPA battle shounen adaptations that came out around the same time. With season 2 finally on the horizon next season, I wanted to host a rewatch for it both to give it the extra eyes I feel it deserves and also give people who did watch it already a chance to refresh their memories on season 1. So, let’s go to Paradise together, shall we?
What is Hell’s Paradise?
Sentenced to death, ninja Gabimaru the Hollow finds himself apathetic. After leading a blood-soaked life, Gabimaru believes he deserves to die. However, every attempt to execute him inexplicably fails. Finally, Sagiri Yamada Asaemon, a fledgling member of a famed executioner clan, is asked to take Gabimaru's life; yet Sagiri makes no move to kill him as requested.
Insisting that Gabimaru will not die because of his love for his wife, Sagiri instead offers him the chance to obtain a full pardon for his crimes. If he can travel to the island of Shinsekyo and obtain the Elixir of Life—which supposedly grants immortality—and bring it back for the shogun, then his freedom will be assured.
But of the many who have traveled to Shinsekyo in search of the mythical Elixir, not a single person has returned sound of mind, if at all. Though unaware of the numerous dangers ahead, Gabimaru decides to accept the offer—alongside ten other death row convicts—in hope that he and his wife may finally live in peace.
Hell’s Paradise is (so far) a 13-episode battle shounen from Studio MAPPA adapting part of the manga of the same name, with the upcoming season 2 set to pick up right where season 1 left off.
Much like Chainsaw Man (which I hosted a rewatch for last month), this series is the type of battle shounen that is not afraid to pull its punches, as you’d expect from a series whose premise includes 10 death-row convicts and their handlers traveling to a deadly island like that. I highly recommend to people who like their action shows to have real stakes!
Wait, what even IS a rewatch?
Rewatches on this sub are effectively the weekly airing discussion threads, but for older shows and usually paced at one-per-day rather than one-per-week. These are open to both people who haven’t seen the show before as well as those who have – any discussion of events past that day’s given episode must be spoiler tagged using r/anime’s spoiler tag format, so as to not ruin the first-timers’ experience. Reading their reactions or having those reactions yourself is half the fun of a rewatch, you know?
/r/anime’s spoiler tag format is as follows:
[Hell’s Paradise]>!Gabimaru loves his wife.!<
Which becomes [Hell’s Paradise]Gabimaru loves his wife. when you don’t break the formatting on purpose like I just did. Do note that if you are a source reader and want to comment spoilers for later in the manga than the anime covers, you’ll want to specify [Hell’s Paradise manga] in the brackets instead of just the series name.
As for how to participate, just pick whatever you’re comfortable with. Some people do bullet point live reactions, some people write essays, some just show up to share memes or fanart and then dip, some solely respond to other participants rather than having a top-level comment on their own – anything goes as long as you’re not being rude!
So, plan ahead on what you’re going to do, watch the episodes each day on your own, and be ready to jump in any time after the threads get posted!
What’s the schedule?
This is where things get a little bit complicated, as we don’t have an exact start date (just “January 2026”) for season 2 so far. I would love for this rewatch to end exactly when season 2 starts up, but I can’t wait until that date gets revealed (which may not be until December 20th, when the series has its stage at Jump Festa) to announce a rewatch for it. As such, my current plan is for the rewatch to start on December 21st, which would put the overall discussion thread on January 3rd. If the start date for season 2 is revealed to be later in January, I will shift the rewatch schedule to match it.
Also, I intend to post the threads each day at 5 pm EST, the same time I posted this thread.
I’m in, where can I watch this show?
Hell's Paradise is available for streaming on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Netflix.
I look forward to searching for the Elixir of Life with you all next month!
