Explanation: After an alliance of convenience in 1939 suited both polities well in invading and genociding the Baltics and Poland, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union under Stalin settled into a short period of peace. While both sides still hated each other's guts on an ideological level, they had decided that the pernicious 'small countries who wanted to exist' and 'Degenerate West' were bigger problems than each other at the moment. A trade agreement was signed, wherein the Soviet Union supplied much-needed materiel for Nazi Germany's war machine.
Stalin was still convinced that he had several more years until Hitler dared turn on him when Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union, commenced. This surprise attack wiped out half-a-million totally unprepared Soviet troops who were in the months-long process of reorganizing and rearming.
This despite several months of Soviet intelligence warning Stalin repeatedly that the Nazis were building up for a massive attack on the Soviet Union.
