The capitulation of Senate Democrats in ending the government shutdown without healthcare concessions has sparked outrage. Calls for new leadership and primary challenges are growing. The fight for a Democratic Party that truly fights back continues.

Could you imagine a government with 30% of the politicians being Independent like Bernie? The corporations wouldnt know who to bribe, politicians would actually need to worry about what voters think. 100% Independent would be horrific for corporations ... and exactly how the founding fathers designed the constitution.

[–] FlyingCircus@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

James Madison’s entire reason for creating the Senate was to protect the “opulent minority” (landholders) from the majority (everyone else). The constitution was always designed to protect capital as its prime directive.

Or they'd throw even more money at them

if independents are so great what happened to Anus King?

edit: not a typo, his name is Anus now.

I knew Schumer was gonna fuck it up somehow. The last few days I was finally starting to get a little hope he grew a spine and actually listened to DNC constituents only to have this blow up. We gave up effective air traffic, SNAP benefits, furloughed and laid off government workers for nothing in return after all these weeks. If his constituents don't demand a new rep after this then what hope do we have in the Senate for the foreseeable future?

Like 90% of the Dems in Congress need to go. Replacing Schumer will be a start but not nearly enough.

and all of the republicans cow-toeing to dear leader

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 3 hours ago

Do you think there are Republicans that don't need to get removed?

[–] crusa187@lemmy.ml 38 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Recall them all, reject dem establishment figures in primaries, and call them up to tell them what you think of this cowardly maneuver. Fucking corpo shills.

[–] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 10 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

Perhaps we've ended up where they're all corporate shills because if you aren't a corporate shill and you can make change happen, you end up dead.

Edit: Or they attempt to denaturalize and deport you...first

Edit: To be clear, i fear for Zohran Mamdani's life if this stupid deportation thing fails.

Wonder what he got as a kickback. He does a lot of surrendering these days.

[–] EtAl@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 10 hours ago

My guess is more bombs for Israel.

Not enough folks know about referendums, and all the cool things they can do.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 23 points 21 hours ago (5 children)

US would do well to support third party candidates while building the vanguard.

[–] ThorrJo@lemmy.sdf.org 25 points 19 hours ago (3 children)

The only path to effective opposition in the United States is through the destruction of the Democrat party. It can't be reformed.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 12 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

It has been before. Many, many times.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

Exactly. Ideological flip. Democrats and Republicans were firmly on opposite side of ideological divide before they switched.

Third party and independents used to be more prominent in congress and senate up until the early 20th century. I think mass corporate media brainwashed people to think within allowable and carefully curated discourse that they can only elect Democrats or Republicans. Hence, manufactured consent.

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I feel like the better option would be to target the Republican party, since social inertia is gonna mean a few cycles of losing to whoever we don't destroy first. I don't wanna have to dismantle capitalism and christo-nationalism at the same time.

We replace it with a blue collar "libertarian" party that's just socialism with all the jargon replaced with country songs.

[–] WraithGear@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (1 children)

not if any attempts to oppose them are done via the “opposing party” you need the democrats to play progressive ball before anything meaningful can be done

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 hours ago

Why do you say that?

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 1 points 15 hours ago

Genuine question, how did that come about?

These decrepit motherfuckers are just an extension of the Democratic party and they're doing exactly what they're supposed to. We need to abandon this party and commit to building a new one - even if it means Republicans win some more elections for a cycle or two.
