hey all,

i was looking at either joining mastodon or bluesky, if im thinking about this in the right way, bluesky is just a mastondon instance, correct? that means that i could choose another instance if i wanted to more suited to what im looking for, but how does it work like lemmy, where i can see posts from all instances on the fediverse?

No, Bluesky is masquerading as an open network, but it is a for-profit business. It is not part of the network of Mastodon and it is not compatible with ActivityPub which is the protocol that makes the Fediverse happen.

Mastodon is developed by an actual non-profit, is genuinely decentralized (not in theory, it IS decentralized, right now) and is of course fully open source.

thanks for giving me the details, so i guess my next step is finding an instance that suits me.

Also if there is someone on Bluesky that you want to follow from your Mastodon account, there are methods to "bridge" the content over.

I haven't done that myself, but others here can probably recommend a service/method

oh ok, there's no one i want to follow anyone atm, but that's good to know.

You can set up on one of the 'intro' instances then once you find an instance that suits you, you can migrate your account (really easy to do).

That way you can find accounts to follow, etc in the meantime and get into the swing of things.

think of mastodon, lemmy and other fediverse software as one network in a umbrella named Activitypub where bluesky is fall under different umbrella and these two umbrella can't be used together you either choose one or the other. there were some efforts for bridging these two networks but I don't know if it's currently possible or not.
