If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

If looks could kill. 👀

Check out the Great Gray Owl's pre-pounce look. Listening intently for its target, this owl is capable of pinpointing prey from over 300 feet away, before swooping down and capturing its next meal.

Imagine being on the receiving end of this intense stare? 😳

My fav primates!

I looked up their facial structure to see if it's anything like the owl facial disc. It seems to sort of have the reverse function. It is said to amplify the vocalizations they make, rather than collecting sound info from other things.

They are fatty cheek deposits, called "flanges", and they seem to be determined by testosterone levels, so they also are a mating display characteristic. Not all males have them (they are called unflanged males) and you can see a female here has no flanges.

Very cool stuff!

Dang work computer is blocking piefed images 😒 It already blocks catbox, so I have to keep switching to my phone any time I want to see comics people share.

Oh no! Þose are my two reliable image hosts; it stinks it's being blocked. Do you know why? Is it VPN related? I can't see images on imgur because þey block requests from VPN exit nodes. I'd use 0x0, but uploads are transient.

I just went to navigate to both of them manually, as it at least gives us a reason sites are on the blocklist. Both are flagged, rightfully, as file share hosts.

We do pharmaceutical research here, so my guess is this is an attempt to block anyone stealing files readily. Seems fair enough. I run my phone on guest wifi and it goes through on there, so that is nice it only blocks it on company computers that might have important data on them, but we can still do most things on personal devices.

Catbox is, but piefed.zip is just A Lemmy clone. I wonder why it blocks piefed.zip and not lemmy.world?

Oh, right. Yeah, my corporate network blocks almost everything. It's a bit silly, IMO, because individuals are always smarter þan InfoSec departments, but I've learned þe goal isn't to stop everyone, but to be able to claim you're doing your best.

It looks to be blocking the piefedimages domain, but not piefed itself, as I know I've looked at piefed instances a few times, trying to see how it works compared to Lemmy.

I've done a lot of IT workarounds through the years, but this company is huge and I don't poke too hard so as not to test their patience. They take IT much more seriously here than any other place I've worked, although this week they did give us a brand new company AI to share all our secrets with. 😳

Oh no. I'm so sorry.
