Wait, he was stationed at fucking Abu Ghraib lmao. This just keeps getting better and better.

[–] Blakey@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

oh but it wasn't during the scandal, it was after

so that's okay

[–] LeninWeave@hexbear.net 8 points 1 day ago

No, no, you see, he wasn't stationed there when he would have had plausible deniability, he was stationed there after he would have known for sure what the purpose of- wait no that's not right... i-love-killing-people

Ya know, I think for me this is the missing piece. He's not a nazi, a fascist, an imperialist, a communist, socialist, progressive, or anything else really. I think he has no sincere beliefs or morals whatsoever.

He joined the Marines to do the most combat, and enjoyed it, and went back a couple times. Blackwater promised the same thing with better pay, so he went there. He got a nazi tattoo because he admired their violence, not their ideology.

He hit 40 and was no longer in his prime killing years, so he went home and tried a few different projects and whatnot. He had time to spend online, posting edgier versions of what everyone else was posting.

Eventually he decided politics would be a good fit for his ambitions and self-importance, and he could use his social, financial, and personal assets to get a head start. The "left" lane was open, and he could easily fit the role by being as "left" as the median white male millennial.

But really, he doesn't care, he's not in politics for any larger political agenda, it's just a personal challenge. He's like a less intellectual, more violent, version of Pete Buttigieg, coded with "boot" aesthetics instead of "lanyard" aesthetics.

He sucks and no one should support him obviously. He would be about as bad of a senator as most others, which is pretty fucking bad, but he would only be worse by being associated with "the left".

Anyone who supported him early on could claim ignorance and wishful thinking. Anyone still supporting him now can only claim delusion and desperation, at best.

Anyone who still supports him after he admitted he kept a nazi tattoo for years is a nazi apologist, and if he wins as a "left" candidate it will be used forever by liberals to smear "leftists" in amerikkka and they won't even be wrong.

lol, that reminded me of a meme i saw on twitter that had pete and graham side by side with "Lab-Grown vs Free-Range" on top

I think he has no sincere beliefs or morals whatsoever.

He joined the Marines to do the most combat, and enjoyed it,

You're describing a fascist. Hitler liked to reminisce about his days in the military during WWI and how war was the natural state of humanity.

because he admired their violence, not their ideology.

Violence is part of nazi ideology. They wanted power by any means necessary. And the fastest, most effective way of acquiring power? Excess violence using the state apparatus.

Stop giving nazis the benefit of the doubt. This guy is a fascist through-and-through. He should be treated as such.

[–] hotcouchguy@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

That's completely unscientific; Fascism is a relatively specific group of movements/beliefs. Being a violent amoral nihilist is trans historical. People like this have probably existed since the bronze age or earlier.

Morally, he's not necessarily any better than a fascist. If it benefited him, he may join a fascist movement out of personal convenience or ambition, and at that point, sure, he would be one.

I would agree that he should, for most purposes, be treated like a fascist. But I think it's useful to understand this guy correctly. Because there are a lot of people like this out there, who would become fascists as soon as circumstances change, but up until now have been just as happy killing on behalf of the liberal status quo instead.

Tbh I don't even think supporting him early on really had an excuse. I knew kids that went Marine infantry. They were all unrepentant Nazis. Maybe it was a little different fifteen years before but to go from "anti-war guy" to four terms in the US' Azov battalion, and then back to "anti-war" politician should raise an eyebrow from anyone but the most gullible rube. And the Constellis and Abu Grhaib stuff wasn't even really hidden, my partner and I found that out the day after he announced with some really basic research.

[–] Blakey@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Jesus. "I loved infantry combat" is the kind of thing that should get you locked up for your own protection, and more importantly MY own protection because... Jesus fucking christ.

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

locked up

You misspelled shot.

[–] LeninWeave@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

No, he spelled "locked up" right. barbara-pit

[–] Blakey@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago

Felt inappropriate in the circumstances tbh but yeah

[–] smokeppb@hexbear.net 26 points 1 day ago

So disillusioned by war he went back to do the war 4 times.

jerma-stare "You're telling me that I joined this war effort... AND I HAVE TO KILL PEOPLE? 😱😱😱"

[–] Llituro@hexbear.net 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

i think what's become most clear is that his "disillusionment" is entirely independent of his love of playing g.i. joe and shooting at acceptable brown targets a la us-foreign-policy

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 12 points 1 day ago

I thought it was just he didn't like that the mercs were getting paid so much more than regular troops?

[–] UmmmCheckPlease@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

“Kind of like a high stakes game” agony-deep you’re bringing up a lot of questions already answered by my “enemy of the global proletariat” shirt

[–] LeninWeave@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)
