Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body.

If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include not just the twitter.com URL but also Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source (archive.today, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org). Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed.

Mass-tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken Markov chain bot will result in a comm ban.

Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.

Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned.

Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society.

Those who were around in the early days of the news megathread may remember Pedro Castillo, the left-leaning leader of Peru who was deposed in December 2022. He was replaced by Dina Boluarte, the first woman to be President of Peru, who described herself as a progressive but afterwards routinely sided with Peruvian conservatives and American interests. To say she was unpopular is an understatement of titanic proportions - she descended to such lows that she was, at one point, the single most unpopular leader on the planet. As with most deeply unpopular leaders that side with the West, she kept power for a bafflingly long time.

However, on October 10th, after a period of protests against the government, she was impeached and removed by Peru's Congress in a unanimous vote. José Jerí was sworn in as the new President, who was previously the President of the Congress and is a member of a centrist Peruvian party. The government is trying the classic strategy: keep doing the same thing as before, and sacrifice an unpopular figure - here, Boluarte - in the hopes that this appeases the crowd.

Is this strategy working? It doesn't really seem to be - protests are not only continuing, but strengthening, as it is clear that neoliberalism will not reformed and the brutality by police will not stop (there was very recently a high-profile case in which a musician, Mauricio Ruiz, was murdered). Controversies surrounding Jerí, including allegations of SA, are already being reported. If Jerí is deposed, the next person in line to try their hand at ruling will be the former army general Roberto Chiabra, who would be the ninth President in less than a decade.

CIA Weighs Shuttering China Center as Trump Shifts Focus to Venezuela

Reflecting the administration’s pivot, the Central Intelligence Agency is now considering dissolving its China Mission Center, according to two sources familiar with the matter, as part of a broader realignment that de-emphasizes confrontation with China.

Sources say that the CIA is thinking about shutting down the China center, in part, for its ineffectiveness, having consumed vast resources with little to show for it. This comes in the wake of one of the CIA’s worst intelligence failures in its history. Between 2010 and 2012, Chinese counterintelligence wiped out the CIA’s network of informants, killing or imprisoning nearly twenty people and destroying years of espionage work, the New York Times reported in 2017. More than a decade later, the agency has yet to fully recover. (The CIA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)

The U.S. is temporarily stepping back from its Cold War with China and channeling its aggression toward Venezuela, reflecting the limits of American power.

For years, the United States built its foreign policy consensus around confronting China. Washington’s overriding goal, across administrations, has been to preserve a global order it no longer commands – launching a trade war against China, rallying the public with anti-China propaganda, and pitting Chinese and American workers against each other.

President Donald Trump has carried that project forward. His China policy looks just as aggressive on paper, as he continues to threaten trade war against the world’s second-largest economy. But behind closed doors, reality is setting in. Having hit the ceiling of confrontation with China, the Trump administration is quietly redirecting energy from that front, at least temporarily, and pivoting toward war with Venezuela – framing a renewed push for regime change and anti-cartel operations as the next front in “national security.”

Russian forces have now encircled over 10,000 Kiev regime troops in Krasnoarmeysk (Donetsk People's Republic) and Kupyansk (Kharkov oblast):

Note, Western imperialist propagandists will probably try claiming that "these aren't real encirclements", but Russian forces can now rain artillery fire (and drones) upon any military vehicles or infantry trying to enter or leave these areas.

After months of buildup, Russia has successfully tested the nuclear powered and nuclear armed Burevestnik (Storm Petrel in English, SSC-X-9 Skyfall NATO designation) cruise missile.

The Chief of the General Staff [Gerasimov] reported that the test took place on 21 October 2025 and that "unlike in previous tests, this time the missile covered the distance of 14,000 km. And this is not a limit." He later added that the missile was in flight for about 15 hours. The missile used its nuclear propulsion system during the flight and conducted a series of "vertical and horizontal maneuvers" demonstrating the capability to evade air- and missile defense.

The same as a regular cruise missile, but over essentially an unlimited range. The idea of a nuclear powered cruise missile is not new, with the US experimenting during the cold war, but abandoning the idea after fielding ICBMs.

The president [Putin] noted that "it will be necessary to decide how to classify this type of armament (presumably to distinguish it from regular cruise missiles), to determine the possible ways of employing this system, and to start preparing the infrastructure for the deployment of this weapon in our armed forces."

English source

Official Kremlin source with video, relevant discussion 9 minutes in

Important to note this test took place exactly one day after the reportedly disastrous Lavrov - Rubio phonecall that led to the cancellation of the hypothesised Budapest summit. Russia has played the Burevestnik test card now, after months of signalling and hinting.

Elon Musk spent $288M to cost Tesla $1.4B in lost revenue – and more to come

Tesla CEO Elon Musk managed to find a way to turn lobbying, which is typically one of the most efficient ways to spend money as a company, into a net revenue loser for his company – flipping the script again from a true “innovator” in the field of corporate destruction.

But, due to Musk’s social media addiction to his bizarre upside-down twitter feed, he and many others convinced themselves that somehow, harming EVs would be good for an EV company.

To be fair, the only reason why Tesla is worth so much is because Elon's stupid brain vibes so well with all the stupids who then buy Tesla stock.

spoiler

During the 2024 US election, Elon Musk spent a total of $288 million on bribes to get anti-EV candidates elected. He did this despite full public knowledge that these candidates opposed electric vehicles, and had promised to harm them.

But, due to Musk’s social media addiction to his bizarre upside-down twitter feed, he and many others convinced themselves that somehow, harming EVs would be good for an EV company.

So, Musk spent the millions, got what he wanted, claims it was all because of him (egotistical much?), and as a result, his company… is worse off.

According to the company’s 10-Q filing, Tesla lost $1.41 billion worth of revenue in just the last 9 months that it would have had if not for changes in regulatory regimes. Here’s the passage, in financial speak:

Translated, that means that the value of Tesla’s various contracts to sell regulatory credits to other companies has reduced by $1.41 billion dollars as compared to where they were at the end of last year. Tesla says that the specific reason for this is due to the change in regulatory credits that its bad CEO lobbied for.

Trump is probably just bragging that he was involved with Israeli war crimes even when Biden was president, but obviously this is true when he was in the WH and true for Biden when Biden was in the WH. They always ask the US for permission because they are a US client state.

Wadephul had told Reuters on Wednesday he planned to urge China to relax export restrictions on rare earths and semiconductors, emphasising fair trade as a cornerstone of successful relations

Literally all China does is emphasize that fair trade is a cornerstone of successful relations then get hit by sanctions and tech restrictions by the US and Europe. Now they’re acting as if every Chinese press conference isn’t just saying “dude what is your fucking problem we’re trying to do business here”

Argentinian midterms results:

Congress (92% of the votes)

La Libertad Avanza (milei): 40%

Fuerza Patria (Peronism and others): 31%

Provincias Unidas (Remnants of the old UCR party and other local parties): 7%

Frente de Izquierda Unidad (Trots): 5%

Senate (90% of the votes)

La Libertad Avanza (milei): 42%

Fuerza Patria (Peronism and others): 28%

Provincias Unidas (Remnants of the old UCR party and other local parties): 13%

Frente de Izquierda Unidad (Trots): 4%

Somehow milei was able to overturn his pretty terrible defeat in the Buenos Aires province EVEN THOUGH his candidate had to drop out due to links with drug smugglers. They hold a 1% lead over the peronist coalition.

Participation was around 60%, the lowest since 1983.

Apparently Ukraine has issues with its drones because of the market making a bunch of different drones/drone parts that aren't necessarily mutually compatible, leading to chaos on the frontline among drone operators.

According to the same military blogger, Russia basically only makes one type of drone so they don't have that issue.

I found this particularly interesting reading through this piece by the eventsinukraine substack so I thought I'd share it here:

Quote by the milbloggerThere’s only one question — quality — and it’s pretty bad, because every FPV manufacturer is trying to get into this field.

But not every manufacturer understands that making drones is not the same as making optics, and as a result we have personnel who weren’t trained and weren’t provided with the necessary gear to service optics working with the attitude that if it only flies every other time — that’s already great.

Different manufacturers, different optics, different batteries, different kits — and that creates overall chaos, because each manufacturer requires specific equipment.

For example, at one position in my unit there are as many as nine ground stations and it’s just a fucking disaster when you’re constantly switching from one to another and, as a result, it all turns into a complete mess and the equipment gets ruined.

You won’t be surprised when I say who acts most sensibly here — the removeds [EIU - the standard term among Ukrainian militarists for the Russians], who in our experience in most cases use one type of drone with optics that everyone basically knows.

I understand we’re supposed to have a market, healthy competition, but for us that turns into a side effect where anyone and everyone rushes to the trough [a hint at corruption - EIU] and as a result we end up saturating the army with a bunch of useless drone models.

Radio gear is similar, but in optics this shows up most clearly because of the complexity of the design.

LOL. Heard in the wild, in the context of an admission that Pissrael will never allow Palestinian autonomy: "Smotrich is just Netanyahu on truth serum".

Anyway, it seems plausible that Trump's main focus right now—and perhaps the entire reason he's yanking the leash a little on Israel—is that he wants "normalization" between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Ukraine and Sweden have signed a letter of intent for Ukraine to purchase 100-150 Saab Gripen E 4.5 generation fighter aircraft over the next 10-15 years.

Source compilation, including Swedish news articles and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's statement

Now currently only 13 Gripen Es exist (10 in Brazil, 3 in Sweden), and Sweden just accepted it's first Gripen E into an operational fighter squadron yesterday. Saab also has about 120 aircraft on order from foreign customers. So the first Gripen Es for Ukraine are over 2-3 years away, and if a contact is signed, it will take a decade to complete. However, Ukraine could get between 10-12 older Gripen C aircraft as soon as 2026, as an introduction to the platform if the deal goes ahead.

Realistically Gripen is probably the best aircraft Ukraine can try get, and most suited to the war Ukraine is fighting. Ukraine's not going to get F-35s, F/A-18E/F production is about to shut down, and F-15EX/Rafale/Eurofighters are too expensive. The only natural competitor is the F-16V Block 70/72, and Ukraine probably prefer Gripen, a platform designed for the very war Ukraine is fighting. Gripen is notable for its capability to operate from makeshift airbases, being quick to re-arm, refuel, and easy to maintain (for a fighter aircraft). Most notable for Ukraine is Gripen's compatibility with the MBDA Meteor air to air missile, which has been in service with the Swedish Air Force for almost 10 years. Meteor is an active radar guided, ramjet powered beyond visual range air to air missile, with an estimated maximum range of over 110 nautical miles/200 kilometers. A joint program by European nations to counter Russian fighters or interceptors armed with R-33/R-37M type air to air missiles.

This is very much still up in the air; funding and Saab production capacity are major issues, considering Ukraine's financial situation and the fact that only 13 Gripen Es currently exist. There's a chance that the deal will fall through at some stage. But it shows that Ukraine intends to re arm it's air force long term with advanced capabilities.

Bloomberg;

“We assume that the measures taken by the United States — as well as those taken by the EU and the United Kingdom — are not intended to target Rosneft’s subsidiaries in Germany,” the German Economy Ministry said Thursday.

Yea, sure. It is inconceivable that the EU or the US would ever do something that isn't good for Germany and/or the EU. It has never happened before!!

spoiler

(Bloomberg) -- Rosneft PJSC’s German unit may be cut off from key customers since it wasn’t excluded from the latest US sanctions against Russia, people with knowledge of the matter said.

The new US sanctions give customers until Nov. 21 to withdraw from “any entity” that’s more than 50%-held by Russia. While Germany put Rosneft’s local assets under a temporary trusteeship after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it stopped short of nationalizing the business, so Berlin will likely have to negotiate a carve-out from the latest restrictions.

It may seek to reach a deal similar to one it struck with the UK, which also imposed sanctions on Rosneft last week. The two governments negotiated a separate clause, allowing Rosneft’s German business to continue.

“We assume that the measures taken by the United States — as well as those taken by the EU and the United Kingdom — are not intended to target Rosneft’s subsidiaries in Germany,” the Economy Ministry said Thursday. Nevertheless, its experience with the UK suggests a specific agreement will be needed.

The government is in talks with Washington to work out a compromise, the people familiar said.

Rosneft Deutschland holds shares in three German refineries, which account for 12% of the nation’s total processing capacity, including PCK Raffinerie GmbH’s Schwedt plant near Berlin. It also has a stake in the Transalpine crude pipeline.

Germany seized Rosneft’s local unit after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and placed it under a trusteeship that’s been renewed every half year. By not nationalizing the entity, it aimed to avoid retaliatory measures from the Kremlin against German businesses in Russia.

EU Fails to Agree on Using Frozen Russian Assets to Fund Ukraine Aid - Telesur English

Article

Von der Leyen seeks to create a ‘reparation loan’ of around 140 billion euros. On Thursday, EU leaders failed to agree on a plan to use frozen Russian assets to finance new loans for Ukraine, after divisions resurfaced at a European Council summit.

The summit’s conclusions contained significantly softer wording than earlier drafts, reflecting Belgium’s objections and legal concerns raised by the European Central Bank (ECB).

EU leaders reaffirmed their political, economic and military support for Ukraine but stopped short of backing any specific funding mechanism. The conclusions merely invited the Commission to present, “as soon as possible, options for financial support based on an assessment of Ukraine’s financing needs,” saying that the issue would be revisited at the next EU summit in December.

The document also reiterated that Russia’s assets should remain immobilized until “Russia ceases its war of aggression against Ukraine and compensates it for the damage caused.”

The dispute centers on a proposal outlined by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in her September State of the Union address to create a “reparation loan” of around 140 billion euros (about US$163 billion), backed by frozen Russian sovereign assets.

The plan is supported by Germany, France and the Baltic States, but opposed by Belgium and the ECB, which warn that it could breach international law and threaten eurozone financial stability.

Belgium holds most of the Russian central bank assets immobilized by the EU shortly after the conflict began. Speaking ahead of the summit, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever said he would block the plan unless other EU members agreed to share the financial risks equally, provide guarantees in case frozen assets must later be returned to Moscow, and ensure all countries holding Russian funds act together.

“If we move, we must move all together, that’s European solidarity,” he said, warning he would use all political and legal means to stop the decision if these conditions were not met.

Movements at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, United States. 11 C-130J Super Hercules transport/cargo aircraft have landed there today. This is significant as Dyess hosts the B-1B bombers, two of which flew very close to Venezuela recently, around 80km from mainland Venezuela. The B-1 has three bomb bays, and can carry a total of 24 AGM-158 JASSM type stealth cruise missiles, or a variety of precision guided gravity bombs/munitions.

U.S. Troops to Arrive in Trinidad and Tobago for Military Drills - Telesur English

Article

Deployment near Venezuelan coast comes amid rising regional tensions. On Friday, the Trinidadian Foreign Affairs Ministry announced that U.S. troops will arrive in Trinidad and Tobago this weekend to conduct military exercises over several days.

This small Caribbean nation lies very close to Venezuela, with the island of Trinidad located just 7 miles from the Venezuelan coast at its nearest point.

The first troops are scheduled to arrive on Sunday in Port of Spain, the Trinidadian capital, aboard the destroyer USS Gravely, which will later be followed by the U.S. Marine Corps’ 22nd Expeditionary Unit.

The USS Gravely will carry out joint training exercises with the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force and is set to depart on Oct. 30.

President Maduro says the US military buildup in the Caribbean is aimed at Venezuela's oil, gas and gold reserves, which are among the biggest in the world. He says the US is creating “Hollywood stories” about narco-trafficking to portray him as the villain and justify…

In the coming days, the U.S. Marine Corps will conduct military exercises with Trinidad and Tobago off the Venezuelan coast.

In recent months, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has accused the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump of seeking to promote political destabilization operations against the Bolivarian revolution.

So far, the United States has deployed warships, a submarine, and fighter jets to the Caribbean Sea to allegedly conduct counter-narcotics operations. These actions have resulted in 37 deaths in nine bombings targeting small motorboats said to be transporting drugs.

Russia has started using a new 1000lb/500kg glide bomb kit in Ukraine, that is significantly more refined than previous glide kits, and takes heavy inspiration from the Israeli SPICE-1000 manufactured by Rafael. In fact, the new Russian glide bomb is so similar, that I bet most won't be able to tell the difference between wreckage of it and a SPICE-1000. Which is which?

1: 2:

spoilerTop image (1) is the Israeli SPICE-1000, bottom image collage (2) is the new Russian glide bomb.

This new Russian glide bomb is unpowered, and is set to offer a range of over 100km, almost double the range of the more crude previous Russian designs. The SPICE-1000 has a range of 125km according to Rafael, to give an estimate of a similar class of weapon. There are rumours of the existence of a rocket or turbine assisted version of this new Russian glide bomb, with ranges approaching 200km, but no images of that yet, just rumours.

One key difference between the new Russian glide bomb and the SPICE-1000 is guidance. SPICE-1000 features an electro optical seeker (camera in everyday English), in the nose to allow for accurate strikes even when satellite navigation is jammed or spoofed, and to allow for different approach angles/azimuths, or even human in the loop guidance if there is a datalink between the weapon and the aircraft firing it. The new Russian glide bomb does not have this, no optical seeker, it still relies purely on satellite and inertial navigation to hit static targets.
