Someone asked me how to install Matrix on Android, so I told them to search for Element on the Play Store, but the app there looks scammy. It’s listed as "Element X — Secure Chat & Call" by New Vector Limited, with 4.4 stars and only 644 reviews. Is that the right app?

I installed Element from F‑Droid, but I don’t want to tell someone to install more than one app just so we can communicate.

Updating: Using that package there was an "Unexpected error: Missing CSRF cookie"

For future reference: if you are unsure about the app on the store, you can always go to the official website and get a link to the right app on the store that way. https://element.io/download

Yes that's the correct one. What's scummy about it?

The circular symbol on black background looks like the many ChatGPT clones.

Fair enough. Have a look at matrix.org, it links to element x as a recommend client.

I prefer FluffyChat. Since version 2 is better than before.

Still no matrix client for android as good as any other "proprietary" chats.

Element X is the new version of Element. There's currently 2 versions available on the store/fdroid since X is in beta.

The fdroid versions of Element X and Schildichat X both seemed to require me installing and setting up nfty to get notifications working.

I've used both element and elementX. element supports rendering math formulae, which elementX doesnt

Element X is supposed to eventually replace Element on mobile, so it will probably support it down the line.

Yes that's the app. It's legit.
