Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

So wait, migrants at fault for being ripped off by greedy landlords? Is that from the same guys claiming woman ask to be raped?

[–] l_isqof@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Migrants don't vote, so they're always the easy target.

They also don't know the market, so again, they'll take what they are offered.

Rent control will help, but many migrants are pushed out of that system as they do not know the local ways (which are typically explained in Dutch).

And yes, whilst full time is generally considered 36 or 40 hours (depends on type of job and collective agreements), many people don't work that many hours, as it is not worthwhile being taxed on the full time hours.

Unfortunately the election debate has become too fragmented on housing to even get a coherent argument through, which makes finding a solution even harder.

What about not working 36-40 hours? Are people in NL working less than that? How many %?

[–] Overspark@piefed.social 2 points 3 days ago

The average is 32 hours. But that is of course because lots of people work 36-40 hours and lots of people work part-time, so 16-24 hours usually. I did actually work 32 hours in my last job but it wasn't that common amongst my colleagues.

While I agree with your points I still think it would be beneficial to limit companies recruiting migrant workers.

[–] l_isqof@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Yes naturally, but they won't always be available, especially in NL.

I agree though, some companies like their cheaper labour.

Hey, don't push back on this! The is are running out of scapegoats already! /s

[–] WaterSword@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I just don’t think it’s scapegoating. Scapegoating would be blaming refugees who make up a miniscule amount of the housing demand, or blaming moroccan/turkish people who have been here for >3 generations already. Which is what populist parties are saying. The points mentioned in this article are about migrant workers, who are encouraged to come work here by the government and corporations, and parties are saying limiting that, will help the housing crisis a bit.

Their homes are usually stacked with matrasses, not uncommon a 3 bedroom home houses 8 migrant workers. Blaming them for the housing crisis is as much scapegoating as blaming foreign students. The reason there is a shortage is because the last 10 years the population has grown faster than the housing stock. The reason for that is bad policies, because the growth that happened was expected and enough houses would have been built if the government wanted to.

I think people are interpreting this wrong. Parties are saying encouraging / enforcing companies to be less reliant on migrant workers will ease the housing crisis. These are not refugees, but people who have been encouraged to come work in the Netherlands. It’s not (just) populist/capitalist parties saying this. It’s the left wing too. In fact the main capitalist parties want to keep migrant workers because big corporations and multinationals benefit a lot from it.
