Yeah I'm not doing it for the energy savings I'm doing it for personal comfort.
If I was really concerned about energy use at that scale I would simply not use a computer.

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.
Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.
Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

I thought that with OLED screens, and a dark mode that supports it, black pixels are actually not backlit, meaning they use less energy. Is that not right?
Right, OP refers to LCD, which is the older tech that works by selective occlusion.
Ah. Thanks for pointing that out, @Septimaeus@infosec.pub. I was considering an OLED screen to be a modern LCD screen.
I use dark mode to save my eyes, not energy.
Interestingly though I haven't had OLED display on any of my devices since 2015.

No, OLED. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is the device in question.

LCDs work by using energy to block the backlight strategically. OLEDs work by only lighting up what you're likely to be able to see in the first place, no backlight.
It almost certainly is slightly more energy intensive, that's just how LCDs work. I wasn't under the impression that was why many people prefer dark mode.
Not necessarily, if the LCD has local dimming depending on the dimming zone size it could be more energy efficient in dark mode.
I just think it's funny that, way back in the DOS days, dark mode was the only mode, then GUIs and the web were the "modern" thing, and if you didn't like, fuck you too bad... Now we've gone full circle.
