That's the essence of politics under liberal democracy isn't it?

The Occidental barbarian struggles to understand the transcendent beauty of Chinese culture, mistaking the sublime for mundaneness.

Something essential is missing

Is it product placement?

[–] huf@hexbear.net 87 points 1 day ago

it's whiteness

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 59 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (4 children)

Unfortunately China has a lot of that. Most jarring thing is they have like town criers but for stores and they are just shouting into a megaphone about good deals with another 100 town criers next to them

Incredibly annoying. DPRK seems way calmer

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 14 points 21 hours ago

they need to send some people to the little caesar's sign twirling school instead.

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 30 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I know that private influence is a crushing problem there, too, but I would honestly have expected them to ban that practice on the basis of it being a public nuisance/unproductive, race-to-the-bottom noise pollution.

[–] AfricanExpansionist@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

China is the world capital of noise pollution...

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That's easier to determine for individual cities, but depending on the source it looks like for countries overall it's probably India. Shanghai on its own is definitely up there though.

[–] Bob_Odenkirk@hexbear.net 15 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Shanghai's pretty quiet. They banned car horns and there are so many electric cars and busses you don't really get engine noise either.

SEA or India makes China feel tranquil imo.

[–] danisth@hexbear.net 5 points 17 hours ago

I had no idea that cities could ban car horns, that’s amazing. Some busy cities are completely intolerable due to overuse of honking.

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 13 points 23 hours ago

Yeh I was gunna say something similar. Yes China has some street level noise but the traffic noise is significantly reduced. I stayed in a hotel on xinzha rd in shanghai amd despite it being next to a raised highway (南北高架路on a Saturday morning all I could hear was the bird call from the park across the street

[–] AfricanExpansionist@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I've lived in four Chinese cities and everybody is noisy all the time, everywhere. It's one of the worst things about living in China

[–] huf@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

even on random videos you get the vibe that the chinese are just loud people that like to talk. contrast this with the weird funereal vibes that japanese often give off.

i've always felt that the shouting thing should make chinese culture more approachable for westerners (maybe i'm just projecting and it's just my family that was shouty), yet due to imperial shenangians, it's japanese culture they're more familiar with.

This is only really in the particularly touristy areas. Just walking around the nieghborhoods here you never encounter it.

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 13 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (1 children)

Or markets, or the carts collecting recyclable appliances, or trucks backing up

There's noisy things outside the tourist areas but yeh igwym

Its probably the most obnoxious example, of course they have western style advertising too (sometimes worse when a whole skyscraper has an LCD ad on it, thats basically only reserved for NYC in the west, but in China there are many skyscrapers like this) in most of the cities, ads should be destroyed

Of course China has a lot of good things going for it but I find these things specifically jarring and terrible

[–] D0ctorPhi1@hexbear.net 7 points 18 hours ago

I live in Chengdu and don't find it to be particularly heinous here, but I have heard it's different in places like Shanghai, Beijing, or Guangzhou.

Nazi cope often has stuff about how there is no "soul" or not true intelligence because it is mechanical like robot while they compare people with a reptile or an insect while mumbling something about it lacking real creativity or some vibes flavored denial but it basically boils down to they are not white and thus will fail and never be real. "Missing something" is also stuff I have heard them say. When someone says something like that, you poke them a little and it immediately devolves into them turning into measurehead

[–] balsoft@lemmy.ml 39 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yeah dude, sure, a 5000+ year old civilization & culture is surely missing a dimension that's obvious to any westerner and will crumble because of that.

Like, contemporary Chinese culture surely has issues (see: rat race to the bottom), but it's nothing compared to the issues of contemporary American culture (see: vaguely gestures at the state of the western world)

Is it the lack of desire to spread DEMOCRACY freedom-and-democracy to others?

Of course when you build your whole personality around how cool and good you are and how the lame and bad people around the world are, and you blame them for making your life worse, then yes you will not be able to relate to someone who focuses on themselves. Even though all human beings have a lot more in common than they have differences, only when you remove yourself from the human experience through the process of self-alienation do you stop being able to relate.

It's just Nazi projection

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 42 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (5 children)

I hope to God this dude isn't American and talking about there being a shallowness to Chinese culture, to say nothing of talking about fucking literature like more than 5% of Americans read literature that was written for adults. Obviously this also applies to the "life" category too, but that's much harder to persuade someone of, while these other points are unforgivable.

So that just leaves non-literary art and, like . . . our best auteurs make movies that are a waste of time and it's just a question of whether they make money from special effects or shot composition that doesn't actually advance a message, and we get like one really good TV series per 10,000, including some of the most heinously senseless garbage you can imagine (shout out to Tulsa King), and remember what I said about how no one reads? If even 1% of Americans can name a single contemporary American painter other than fucking Banksy, I would truly be fucking shocked unless it was like a comic book artist who paints on the side (no disrespect to them), or if .1% could name a sculptor. Don't worry about digital art either, because we're doing our best to drown it in AI slop (like literature, incidentally).

But it's okay, because we have the long tradition of American musical theater, where the biggest play of the last decade, which the cultured First Lady Michelle Obama (BA from Princeton, JD from Harvard) called "the best piece of art in any form that I've ever seen in my life," is . . . Hamilton

Fuck this fucking country. Literally all we have is music, and that shit's been dominated by sexual abusers since rock and roll was a real thing, if not longer.

[–] huf@hexbear.net 30 points 1 day ago

that one american painter: george bush. i'm so sorry.

[–] reaper_cushions@hexbear.net 29 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Banksy is British, so... it's still 0?

also dead, the Dollop did an ep on this guy and the details of his last few years are wild. all I remember is him being blackout drunk in Italy with some woman he terrorized

The Dollop Podcast Ep 77- Christian Artist Thomas Kinkade

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 5 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Kinkade was such a piece of shit. Always scamming people out of money, using NDAs like WMDs, drinking, shouting, etc. But at least he named all three of his sons "Christian" to show his faith!

[–] miz@hexbear.net 5 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

Children: Merritt Kinkade, Winsor Kinkade, Chandler Kinkade, Everett Kinkade

are you sure? I'm seeing four sons named after artists

Very silly mistake on my part, but others pointed out a couple of other celebrity painters (who are really just famous people who also happen to paint), so we can substitute them.

There's a...brightness, you could say, that's missing from them. They lack that kind of... spark of white-hot creativity, Their worldview is...colored by different presumptions

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

the-democrat Americans live five dimensional lives. Those Chinese "people" living with only four dimensions could never understand our brilliance.
