Day 13 of the 15-day tourney in Japan just finished a couple hours ago! Here's how you can watch recaps, replays, or live! Feel free to post images, video links, opinions, or anything else related!

Live / Replay:

  • try searching on twitch, this tourney there are at least 3 different streamers providing live video feeds with English commentary, and it's fun to have a community to chat with in real time. The top Makuuchi matches start around 3am US Eastern Time though. At least 1 of the streamers does replays all day, usually of the entire day (including lower ranks).

Video Clips:

  • youtuber DonDon makes a daily video of the "best 10" matches listed in English with replays including on-screen English analysis; those are listed here: https://www.youtube.com/@dondonsumo2/videos Besides the "best 10" of the top Makuuchi tier, DonDon also makes a "best 5" of the second Juryo tier.
  • NHK makes a daily video that has all the top-tier Makuuchi bouts with English spoken commentary. This video is replayed on their web site several times during the following day (kind of like an old-fashioned TV station); you can see the schedule here: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/ look for "Grand Sumo highlights." After a day of scheduled replays, the video is put up for "on demand" access here: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/ and here: https://www.youtube.com/@NHKWORLDJAPAN/videos
  • NHK immediately posts individual videos of each bout listed in Japanese with Japanese commentary. Look here: https://www.nhk.jp/p/ts/Z8WRRJ9K96/ and use a translator to click on the link that says like "2nd day's effort video / results ", or just try one of the first links under "お知らせ" (which means "News" ?) it should have a pointing hand emoji 👉 next to it.
  • JSA immediately posts individual videos of each of the highest-ranked 10+ matches listed in Japanese with no commentary, here: https://www.youtube.com/@sumo-video/videos
  • For the listings in Japanese, try automated translations if there's a lot of text. Alternately, look for something like: 9月14日 which in this case refers to the 9th month and the 14th day (September 14th). Automated translation doesn't work that well on sumotori names, but this is a great opportunity to learn them by sight! (The JSA web site has pictures of them all.)

WAH! I wanted to watch it live, but I went out earlier in the eve and passed out at home around 2am (Makuuchi starts around 3am where I'm at, so I'da had to stay up til like 4:30am...)

The Shishi match was interesting, almost looked like he was trying to adopt Aonishiki's inside grappling approach, which doesn't really suit him. But he got his Kachi-koshi a couple days ago, so it's all good. Really glad he seems to have recovered from whatever was holding him back the last couple tourneys (leg injury I think?)

The Ura match was a little sad... he looked like he had a hard fall, but he got up OK and was his usual smiling self as he bowed out... I hope he's all right...

Big Poppa winning on the last day was great; only one match down from a kachi-koshi, so it's quite a comeback, given his... 6!? straight losses at the start of the tourney! Seriously never know what to expect from this guy, I love cheering for him.

I'm not sure what to make of the Aonishiki match. I keep thinking people are gonna "figure out" how to beat him, and I'm not sure if this is that way; looks like Wakamotoharu got an inside grip first so A. couldn't get his usual inside position? Or was it just that Aonishiki tried that leg hook that spectacularly failed? At any rate, at the beginning of the tourney there was an interview where A. was saying his goal this tourney was to get a better than 11-4 outcome, and looks like he didn't get it, but still a very good tourney for him.

The Clash of the Yokozunas... It looks like Onosato wasn't charging as hard as he could at the very start, which is understandable given Hoshoryu's skill at henkas. In the second bout, Onosato gave it 100% and it paid off, for a well-deserved yusho win. The man is on another level, as befitting a Yokozuna.

On the sidelines, Takerufuji we haven't forgotten about you, I hope he stays out as long as he needs to and that his injury heals well.

Coming down to the possibile yokozuna showdown, as it should. Glad hoshoryu could stay injury free this time around

Yesterday (day 12) was intense. Aonishiki is going to be a yokozuna someday. And Fujinokawa is my favorite newcomer right now, even though he has a losing record in this tournament.

I missed day 12 and so I watched the summaries of both day 12 and day 13 this morning... there was a lot of excitement!

Dunno about Aonishiki being yokozuna. I hope so, but it's just too soon to tell. I think people are gonna continue adapting to his style. Plus, there's always the danger of injury... (let us hope not).

Fujinokawa's doing great; he's only 20, it's his second tourney in Makuuchi, and he's not doing THAT badly at M9. Sure, he could have a better record but he's facing the top sumotori in the world. not everyone can be a superstar, lel I wish I was as successful as him at anything!

I hope so, but it’s just too soon to tell.

It's definitely way too early to tell, I just wanted to be able to say "I called it" just in case it happens. :P
