"This is my newly designed lightweight tactical vest, featuring portability, rapid sling adjustment, infrared-resistant and flame-removedant properties..." In the laboratory of Chongqing Jiaotong University's School of Mechanical, Electrical and Vehicle Engineering, Huang Yanjun, a sophomore majoring in mechanical design and automation, introduced his innovation to reporters.

Born in 2004 and just turning 20, Huang has already participated in four national-level key research projects and holds two personal patents. Recently, as a tactical equipment developer, he showcased his military gear at the 12th China Command and Control Conference and the 9th Beijing Military Intelligent Technology Equipment Expo. After the event, he rushed back to campus by 8 a.m. the next morning to attend class. A short video documenting this experience, titled "Post-00s Student Creates Tactical Gear," went viral on social media, with netizens joking in the comments: "You’d never guess the sleepyhead next to you in morning classes might be a ‘weapons master’ fresh from an expo."

"I’ve loved sci-fi movies since childhood, especially those with advanced gadgets. I always wondered if I could build them myself," Huang shared. Fueled by curiosity, he began dismantling circuit boards from junkyards in middle school to experiment with electronics. His innovation teacher, Zhang Zhirong, recognized his talent and encouraged him to join tech competitions. Huang later won top awards such as the National Youth Scientific Literacy Competition first prize and the Chongqing gold medal at the 16th Soong Ching Ling Children’s Invention Awards, while also being selected for Chongqing’s Youth Innovation Talent Development Program.

"Actions speak louder than daydreams," Huang remarked. Beyond coursework, he self-studied robotics and electromechanics to create a wearable lower-limb exoskeleton assistive robot, now patented. "I’ve always admired pioneers like Qian Xuesen and Deng Jiaxian. I want to contribute to national defense with my skills," he said.

Huang’s online posts about his inventions, including a viral "Fursuit Controller" modeled after wolves and tigers, have garnered a massive following. The high-tech headgear features eye-tracking movement, sound-responsive ears, brainwave-based blinking algorithms, and a ventilation system. "From 3D modeling to processor board design, I did it all myself," he explained proudly.

Even his parents initially questioned his path. "Last year, my mom reminded me to ‘focus on my main studies’," Huang recalled. But after he appeared on a national defense TV program this April as a tactical equipment developer, their skepticism turned to support: "Stay true to your passion and serve the country."

Reflecting on his journey, Huang recently posted: *"For the sake of passion, I know how relentlessly I’ve strived. Beyond the thorns and boulders, the light boat has passed endless mountains."* He added, "This is my way of cheering myself on."

When you provide people with the needs to survive and allow them to pursue their dreams you end up with mecha furry, who'd have thunk huh

Animal exoskeletons are the next step in human evolution, as our ancestors descended from the trees, we must descend into the ocean as crabs.

chinese furries are on a whole different level

After recently coming out as a furry myself and getting a more in depth look on the community from my furry friends, i can't help but be amazed at how crafty many of these people are, how much creativity i find in that fandom and, ofc, also how much i want fluffy animal ears that automatically align themselves in the direction of noises around me jfc this is so cool that guy is cooking.

I want kitty ears that airplane when I'm upset, just like real cats. Or bear ears that respond when scritched behind. That'd be neat. I'm not even a furry, I just like fluffy animal ears as a bit and a way to get more hugs from my family and friends. And, y'know, I've been into Winnie the Pooh since I was like, a year old, so tiger ears that let me make Tigger jokes are fun. (What I'd love is a fully soft headband like the tiger ears I already have, with more accurate specifically Tigger ears. Or a set of yellow "Pooh" teddy bear ears.)

I’m not even a furry

not yet

I suppose I'll say I'm whatever terminology you people want to classify me with, if it gets me a hug from one of those adorably snuggle shaped anthro bears I see all over "furry" spaces. Even as a kid, I was the guy who'd say anything for a hug from something fluffy...

Chinese developing weapons - Hey, it's cool the kind of stuff these guys make! Excellent foray into experimentation!

America developing weapons - Oh God, who are we invading? Did they test these on the people of Gaza? What are they planning? No more wars, just stop already, please!

[–] vovchik_ilich@hexbear.net 22 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I hope you're being unironic because that's literally me

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago

I realize now that maybe my post may come off as ironic or criticizing hexbear; I'm not, this is honestly my feelings on the matter, I'm not a lib

[–] Abracadaniel@hexbear.net 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

now compare what the PLA and US military have been doing for the last 50 years?

alternative response: actually it's a good idea to not develop new weapons while the US openly discusses open war with your nation and destroying your state.

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I wasn't being ironic, this is my genuine feelings on the matter

I could spend an hour talking about over ten different struggles for freedom over the last forty to fifty years and they'd all be about struggles against America

Exo fursuit

I'm done man.

[–] RNAi@hexbear.net 18 points 3 days ago

What a waste of talent, he could have been a groyper

[–] coolusername@hexbear.net 24 points 3 days ago

i looked up "brainwave-based blinking algorithms" and it seems to be well-established science by now

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 5 points 3 days ago

Oh, to imagine a legion of mecha panda bears in PLA insignia, marching through Western streets, Red Dawn style... too bad we commies lost the Cold War, that scene could be Soviet grizzly bears and Chinese panda bears on a joint operation...

[Everyone freaks out over the bears carrying rifles and marching through the streets. I just want a hug from one of the huge fuzzy commie bears after the fighting's over.]

Okay, fine, I just really wanna see the propaganda poster produced afterwards of a grizzly bear and a panda bear cuddling, maybe with their cubs in frame.
