Men could face terrorism-related and weapons charges after officials say explosive ‘had been lit but failed to function’

Authorities in Utah say two men have been arrested on suspicion of placing an incendiary device under a news media vehicle in Salt Lake City. The bomb didn’t go off.

Police and fire department bomb squads responded on Friday when a suspicious device was found under the vehicle parked near an occupied building.

Investigators determined the bomb “had been lit but failed to function as designed”, according to court records cited by CBS affiliate KUTV.

Geee, it’s almost as if Republicans are violent and hateful.

[–] zzx@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Where are u seeing that they're right wing? I looked everywhere and couldn't find it

[–] Zier@fedia.io 47 points 1 week ago (2 children)

But they are so "pro-life".

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 week ago

Charlie Kirk was pro life. He died pretty damned quick.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago (2 children)
[–] kescusay@lemmy.world 25 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not even that. If they were pro-birth, they'd at least be in favor of easy access to prenatal healthcare. But they're always opposed to that, too.

They're just pro-pregnancy. They don't give a shit if a woman's pregnancy is viable or not, let alone whether carrying the fetus to term will kill the woman or not.

[–] III@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Anti-choice is most appropriate. They don't care if a woman becomes pregnant as long as the woman is subservient.

They ran off with a rhetoric without any facts first, showed everyone how violent they want to be, the facts now show that their rhetoric was ignorant bullshit, they still want to be violent anyway so they’re going to do it in the name of their original rhetoric, facts be damned. They are just violent psychopaths. Stay strapped with that scum walking amongst us

[–] GissaMittJobb@lemmy.ml 16 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Not saying I disagree with the statement, but where did you see that these men were Republicans? I didn't find any reference to any political motivation in the article, but I also didn't read it particularly thoroughly

[–] possumparty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 48 points 1 week ago (3 children)

If they were left leaning in any way they would have led with that.

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago

Sometimes they lead with that even if it's not true.

[–] RFKJrsBrainworm@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

If they even so much as had a conversation with a left-leaning person news would have led with that especially today

I didn't find any reference to any political motivation

I didn't either, but that probably implies they are white christofacists, right? (Or, as the Utah governor put it, "one of us"?)

If their demographic was any different and fit the narratives that the Right is trying to spin on this, it would have been leaked already....

[–] prettybunnys@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The Utah governor used “one of us” to mean a member of their local community.

I get why it’s such a fun sound bite but it comes across as dumb as the right yelling let’s go Brandon

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

and by a member of their local community he meant a member of their church,

i lived there, i know their dogwhistles

It's probably best not to make assumptions before we know for sure.

Same as the motivations behind Charlie Kirk's shooter should not have been assumed to have been either left or right until we know for sure.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

You're correct, but you are also assuming the media is honest. If I am correct in my assumption that the media (or, at least the mega corporations that own them) are carefully curating favor with the administration, then if these people were "on the right" we'll be told that they are "on the left" anyway.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It’s probably best not to make assumptions before we know for sure.

Right, but we can make educated deductions based on what we know. I tend to agree that (as with the case with Kirk's killer), if any politics left of center were involved, we likely would have heard about it already.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

You are correct, but I will say, their fascist in chief has been demonizing the media, and the right has a track record of domestic terrorism, so while it is possible they were progressive people, chances are they were conservatives

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not Republican, MAGA. Republicans don't exist anymore. And we know they were MAGA, because the bomb didn't go off, because MAGAs are predictably virtuosically incompetent. If they were Democrats, the bomb would have worked.

Also Republicans are too cowardly to try to bomb anything. MAGAs are cowardly, too, but the are also breath-takingly stupid, so their stupidity often overwhelms their cowardice, and they do remarkably dumb stuff, like try to storm the Capitol.

Just your normal religious and political oppression.

[–] UltraMagnus0001@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

Johnny Harris just did a video about his time as a Mormon and how rich the church is

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Average day in Utah, and every other Red state.

Wait, Jason Segal was in SLC Punk? I've only seen it once, way back in highschool and I must not have known who he was back then. Huh.

[–] GeeDubHayduke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

He's all straight-laced, but the most punk of them all.

American stochastic terrorism

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 week ago

Yep, we're starting to see the results of 40+ years of very dark, very violent propaganda

[–] UnculturedSwine@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Mormonism and narcissism. I say this as a former Mormon from Utah. They are not as peaceful as they seem.

[–] cyberwitch@reddthat.com 8 points 1 week ago

High profile Mormon crime in the past 10 years alone is pretty staggering

[–] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Whole show called American Primeval about the Mormons. Great miniseries.

[–] Ironfist79@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago

Just the usual right wing terrorism.

[–] whiwake@lemmy.cafe 14 points 1 week ago

Nothing has changed.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 6 points 1 week ago

Hmmm I sure wonder which side these two guys belonged to.......

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 29 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Definitely liberal democratic socialists. Definitely.

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 21 points 1 week ago (3 children)

They probably have pro-trans ideologies

[–] Peter_Arbeitslos@feddit.org 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Most probably even worse: Anti-car ideologies, even trying to destroy a car

"Had been lit", was it like a stick of dynamite?

[–] Hector@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago (3 children)

In the guardian one line sort of suggested an incendiary, but then later in searching the house they said explosive material. There is a huge difference between actual explosives and incendiaries. Gasoline and dynamite are completely different animals.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago (3 children)

i don't trust the news to get the difference between high explosives, explosives, firebombs, and potato guns.

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

potato guns.

That's obviously a Glock...

When are they getting invaded with Nazi jackboots?

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I recommend watching “murder among the Mormons” on Netflix.
