MODERATORS

Since our front page has about a 60% parity with theirs (don't think I didn't notice!) it may be good to offer some life rafts.

On the other hand, there is a lot of reddit brain over there. A lot would flip out over no downvotes or not being allowed to say certain slurs.

We welcome any new users but we do not officially life raft anymore

[–] Des@hexbear.net 47 points 4 days ago (1 children)

it's cool pretty sure 50% of that sub is hexbears anyway

[–] john_brown@hexbear.net 56 points 3 days ago (1 children)

oh no if you bring up hexbear they get all up in their feelings about not being able to use the r word and stuff

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 31 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They're the 50% that got banned.

[–] Des@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago

ironically yes because half of the comments will be people praising hexbear.

all those banned mostly seem to gripe about CW for meatposting so i guess they were purged during the vegan struggles

[–] ShareThatBread@hexbear.net 28 points 4 days ago

GOOD. LESSON LEARNT FINALLY.

[–] CyborgMarx@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago

but we do not officially life raft anymore

God, we really have matured, I love it

[–] TheBigL@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 2 days ago

What does it mean to life raft someone?

[–] Des@hexbear.net 61 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

it's weird because r/trueanon is like a mix of hexbears who still use reddit, former hexbears who were naughty and went there as a life raft, libs, and this disgusting tiny minority of stupidpol reactionaries and redscare fascists (who are mercilessly found out and generally booted when mods catch on).

there are some really cool people there though i wish would come here and hang out with us (the ones i like are all women of various sorts though)

[–] somename@hexbear.net 35 points 4 days ago (2 children)

The stupidpol and redscare posters generally get dunked on at least when they show their ass

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 31 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

They kinda won the Taylor Lorentz thread which was one of their more recent struggle sessions. Caring about minorities in the abstract is easy, being asked to actually mask up to protect disabled people is... also easy, but that won't stop most people from acting like it's hard.

[–] Des@hexbear.net 17 points 4 days ago

yeah and i think they are planning on bring back the bots to detect them. usually those at the bottom of a thread with negative upvotes are always stupidpol posters

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 20 points 3 days ago (1 children)

hexbears who still use reddit

i only lurk because i don’t have a reddit account anymore so it uh, doesn’t count side-eye-1

[–] Mindfury@hexbear.net 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Tfw you can't quit browsing the slopyard but they've literally IP and hardware banned you from making an account so you can't yell at people

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago (2 children)

how do they keep track of hardware bans?

[–] Mindfury@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

I don't fuckin know, gotta be mobile device HW IDs and MAC addresses or something.

All I know is I got permbanned like 10 years ago for getting drunk one night and reporting every post in a fash sub (circlejerkaustralia), which went to the admins and got me banned for report abuse. Every single account I've ever made since has been permbanned within 2 weeks for evasion. Completely different burner emails, phone on wifi, phone off wifi, work laptop while actually in the office - doesn't matter, all get banned some time between 1 hour and 2 weeks after creation.

[–] lurkerlady@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Use mullvad browser with a vpn, they're identifying you off of known browser fingerprints.

I think cache data

[–] Llituro@hexbear.net 51 points 4 days ago

this would be the funniest reason for a subreddit to get banned since chapo got clapped for hating slave owners.

[–] Spike@hexbear.net 48 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It was what brought me here, joined on 9/11

[–] LisaTrevor@hexbear.net 25 points 4 days ago (1 children)

happy early cake day

edit: thanks for the gold kind stranger

[–] lemmyseizethemeans@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 4 days ago

PTSD warning pls

[–] kleeon@hexbear.net 41 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

love this site for letting me be almost as deranged as I want

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 16 points 3 days ago

Almost, we still have standards of course pineapple-cool

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 40 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

I'm willing to let them in but they need to accept they are LIBs on the topic of masking. I want congressbaseballfan back here though.

Edit: on the other hand, I don't know what this was all about but that's one of their most active and interesting posters, it would really suck if some of the best users from over there have legit grievances over here that are keeping them from joining. I feel like Hexbear is usually pretty good about dealing with DM harassment, even when the perpetrators are known and respected users, so it seems odd.

[–] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

This post reminded me I have an inbox

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Bit idea: guy who gets harassed in DMs but doesn't notice

[–] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 21 points 3 days ago

That happened to me on Reddit once. A Destiny fan apparently spent a month sending me death threats and I didn’t even realize until a year after it happened

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 9 points 4 days ago

I'm not too sure about the reporting systems before hexbear rejoined lemmy federation since I wasn't a mod in that prehistoric period, but I can say for certain we are able to report DMs as users and the admins are able to quickly and decisively handle the incidents as they come.

[–] Parzivus@hexbear.net 27 points 4 days ago

Trueanon is like the only good subreddit left, I would be a little sad if it got banned

[–] Euergetes@hexbear.net 25 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Since our front page has about a 60% parity with theirs (don't think I didn't notice!)

i have terrible news about r/196 for you

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 19 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's a bit closer to lemmy.world or db0 on a bad day.

[–] Euergetes@hexbear.net 18 points 4 days ago (2 children)

the news content is extremely different but i see many repeated memes toriel-glare

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's true (and I've reposted some stuff from there myself) but I think the tone of the communities is wildly different. Hexbear is much more millennial - gen X, a lot more long posts, lots of nerdy discussions. /r/196 is clearly much younger, all discussion is superficial, and obviously it's full of chasers.

[–] Euergetes@hexbear.net 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

196 discussions/comments are always insufferable it's true

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It's not even about the liberalism. Every discussion there tends to be people giving their opinions in the form of hot takes, speaking confidently (and often in memespeak) when making statements that deserve to be backed up by sources. They have this way of talking that really lends itself to confirmation bias because each side of a conversation makes inflammatory claims that may sound conclusive, so whichever side the majority agrees with (on the basis of sounding nuanced and correct) gets anointed. Case in point: https://hexbear.net/post/4476685

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's frequently how it goes on Hexbear, too, except usually leaning toward what rhetorically sounds righteous rather than nuanced.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago

I think most of our struggle sessions have been on topics where both sides agreed on the facts but disagreed on the prescriptions to be derived from those facts, or on something more aesthetic/symbolic. In those cases it's really not like one can make arguments that are backed up by much evidence, except maybe trying to gather a lot of people's opinions so one can say "most people are okay with this" or the opposite.

On that subreddit, people often get away with making factually incorrect claims because of the nuance fetish. See the thread I linked where the entire motivation of Operation Prosperity Guardian is glossed over and dismissed in the name of finding a reason why Things Are Complicated:tm:

[–] Wheaties@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Sometimes I source memes from tumblr, just to add a little more variety but its a bit of a pain.

I heard once that facebook ate up MySpace users by having new FB users give them their MySpace log in credentials, then Facebook would scrape their myspace follows and display new MySpace posts on the user's facebook feed.

I think hexbear (and really, more the fediverse overall) could learn from that. Like, if there was a "submit reblog" button where I could drop a URL from tumblr (or I guess even ecks the everything app) and it converts the links and images and text into a lemmy post, that would be really useful in dragging the overall lemmy culture away from its reddit origins

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

why don't they just disavow so hard that the nondisavowal is obvious

[–] AF_R@hexbear.net 16 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Could have been a great time for a bit where they only allow text posts titled “I disavow” with no body text for 24 hours

And the only comments allowed? Believe it or not…

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 15 points 3 days ago

My child, say 20 disavowals and 2 hail marys and go about your business.

come to lemmygrad we have downvotes

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 15 points 4 days ago

liberals smh

Issue is the TA sub is a bit too into edgy humor for this sites culture.

Still love 'em tho.

[–] OttoboyEmpire@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago

Imagine worrying about a subreddit lol. Extremely pathetic behavior.

[–] stupid_asshole69@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago

We should take them in and let them say the slurs but make their avatars have little armbands on.

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I welcome them, yeah they've got some reddit on them but so did most of this site

I'm one of the few people on the site who's never had a reddit account so maybe I just don't get it but I think most if them would fit in fine here and we can always use more comrades
