Kyiv sees a well-equipped army as a stronger deterrent to Moscow than any Western pledges to defend it. It is working to attract billions to buy more arms.

Peace through being a hard target is a strategy that has been proven effective throughout history.

It'd be nice if international law and fickle allies would help, but those have never been that reliable.

I think Ukraine is spending over 30% of its GDP on the military.

So is the endgame for Ukraine to acquire underground nukes? Honestly that might be the only way to really force a standoff and de-escalation. I wouldn't blame them at all, since they were betrayed after giving up the ones they originally had.

They should be. Russia would have never set a toe in Ukraine if they kept the nukes, and the fuckery of Russia invading and the 'civilized world' sitting around with thumbs up their asses since 2014 seems like proof that having nuclear weapons is a prerequisite to maintaining sovereignty

agreed. what an absolute fucking own goal by the West. fucking stupid.

Some people are getting very very rich from the ongoing war. There are now definitely strong forces at play to keep it going as long as possible, without a victory for any side.

i don't doubt it, but an extremely short-sighted, risky, not to mention EVIL approach.

the only acceptable outcome for our society is for Russia to lose. anything else and the West is fucking done.

I can’t blame them for wanting it, but let’s not go there.

Reducing the number of countries with nukes was and still is a good idea. Everyone seems to think that MAD was a reasonable strategy because we muddled through without ending civilization. It is not. It is not foregone. It is not likely. It is way too big a risk for all of civilization.
