I live in Brazil, a country where piracy is extremely easy. You don’t even need to use a VPN to download torrents, for example. For me, piracy is almost a matter of survival. I’m poor, and I wouldn’t have access to practically anything if it weren’t for piracy. However, this freedom is now being threatened.
Our government is about to approve a law similar to the Online Safety Act which, on paper, is a thousand times worse and more absurd. Disgusting, even. Basically, it requires that ALL (yes, all) online services demand from adults to prove their identities with a photo of their faces or personal documents. Websites that fail to comply could be blocked. This law was made up under the justification of “protecting children from accessing inappropriate content.” Absurd, isn’t it? There’s no way this could even be properly enforced. Still, it’s concerning.
On one hand, I’m somewhat calm, since laws here are ridiculous, weak, and almost NEVER enforced unless there’s massive public pressure. Still, I don’t want to lose my freedom, especially since this law opens up huge precedents for censorship and persecution in the future. So, where do I start? Should I set up a server? Move to Linux? Which VPN should I use?
I’m grateful to anyone who at least takes the time to read this desperate statement. Any guidance, no matter how small, already means a lot.
