Here is my two cents on that question

When I fill out a sponsorblock,
I feel like I have comitted an act of civic duty
I feel pride

I hope others feel that too

I want to ***** on the grave of Ivy Lee and Edward Bernays and sponsorblock lets me symbolically do it.

We are participants in an hyperwar and I hope our side win.

Fellow sponsorblocker,
I don't know who you are,
I don't know where you are
But can I see you and I am proud of you
Fellow sponsorblocker, I salute you O7

To stop the nasty goblins and their stooges
who constantly besiege our minds and try to infect them
##Is our solemn duty
in this digital hyperwar
To protect the innocent from their vile endeavour
to have less and want more

I have submitted over 500 segments and they've been used over 250,000 times saving over 1800 hours.

That's 1800 hours of the-device-that-watched-it's electricity saved (minus whatever amount humans might have skipped manually)

[โ€“] AcesFullOfKings@feddit.uk 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

oh is it this time again already

O7 Thank you for your service I only posted dozens across many computers, it's almost always already done except when I watch really niche stuff, but more niche stuff doesn't sponsor segments

Awesome ! ๐Ÿ™Œ

[โ€“] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Definitely. I hope to live to see the eradication of ads from my life.

[โ€“] interdimensionalmeme@lemmy.ml 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yes, even in meatspace, they defile nature with their billboard and now fucking TVs on the side of highway, destroy them, burn them, advertising is pollution of the soul and a defiling of our shared reality, its perpetrators are criminals.

I LOVE sponsorblock.

I've submitted 755 segments since around early 2022.

751,245 skipped segments saving people 220d7h25m (5,287h25m) of their lives.

It is civic duty and mutual aid

SB is my good friend. I love gaining my time back, and it does my heart good when I'm given the opportunity to give time back to others.

[โ€“] dwindling7373@feddit.it 8 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Eh, I don't mind sponsored content at least they are explicit and naturally skippable.

Unskippable stuff is the real issue imho, I don't use Sponsorblock on purpose.

[โ€“] gon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You could use Sponsorblock and simply not skip sponsors. Use it to skip interaction reminders or intros, for example.

It's a very useful extension.

Yes, just having them clearly labelled on the seek bar is great
if you decide the product is not for you, there is a button to skip to the end of the segment manually, if you'd like to consider it first

I have a severe allergy to all paid speech and derivatives.

My only regret is that I can't disinfect it from from my internet at the router level without my very old phone having to do the heavy lifting

[โ€“] crazyminner@lemmy.ml 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

This thread is being a little two wholesome, who is cutting onions in here ?

[โ€“] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 3 points 4 days ago (5 children)

Y'all really want people to make videos for free and get no monetary reward from it, innit?

[โ€“] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You mean like in the early days when people made videos for free and got no monetary reward from it?

Yes. Yes, like that.

[โ€“] lemmyknow@lemmy.today -3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Damn, y'all really want people feeding you for free

Advertising made art is an affront to art and should not exist, should not be permitted to exist, it is a corruption of our mental space

[โ€“] interdimensionalmeme@lemmy.ml 10 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I want google youtube facebook amazon apple and the ENTIRE ADVERTISING MARKETING PUBLIC RELATION ETC. INDUSTRY to die an ignominious death.
I want NO ART WHATSOEVER nor journalism, to be advertising funded.
I want to abolish all intellectual property, all created artworks of any kinds to be the infinite freely reproducible goods that they are
I want all art, journalism to be paid in advance and reliably so the people who do it and are good at it have a respectable life and not "just the rockstar" decided by distribution executives
I want all blitzscaled and hyperscaled companies to crash and burn, they are price predator anti-competitive monopolist
I want all giant institution to be abundantly and unambiguously good for us and not just good for shareholder profit
I want all the scum trying to hack my brain with endless manipulation tactics to have their mouth filled with ash and regret
I want to stop all the peeping eyes spying on me in the showers, listening to the vibration of mems devices in my phone and infering my emotional state when I delete a selfie or menstruate
I SHIT TO STOP BEING FUCKED

Is that REALLY too much to ask ?

We know the problem and IT'S "YOU"(*) !

(*) You, the mental pattern that weeps for the ads, ads aren't free they cost us our free will, that's literally what they buy, you probably like saying "well free healthcare isn't free" yes but you know what at least with free healthcare everyone benefits from everyone else being healthy. With ads we sell our souls for more doomscroll and the only ones that benefit is private equity while the creator still gets left behind in the rat race of the tournament economy.

[โ€“] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I believe people should be paid for their time and effort. It's probably not sustainable to be regularly shooting and uploading videos on the side of a 9-5 job, and getting paid from videos allows people to focus on making them. Doesn't necessarily need to be ads or sponsors, but at the moment, it seems to be how it goes. At least sponsor segments aren't privacy invasive (unlike YouTube ads, probably).

If you're directly contributing to someone's money-making through different means, like Patreon or Nebula or whatever else, then I think SponsorBlock can be justified. In fact, it'd be interesting if SponsorBlock or something similar allowed people to directly contribute to creators in exchange for skipping sponsors.

[โ€“] interdimensionalmeme@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's a money centric worldview.

I don't think advertisers should be allowed to patron the arts, I think they have infected the art space and this is bad for all of us.
I think people would do better, truer art (even if it were of lower objective quality) by not suffering the incentives and directives of advertising.
I see advertising as a corrupting drug for art. While it creates more bulk I think it has made art worse as a whole.
After the "adpocalypse" where were have destroyed every piece of advertising and cleansed it from the stench of marketing.
This post-advertising world would have more art it in, it would mean more it would be better
Nature abhors a vacuum, the death of advertising centric art would create a fertile space for art that is simply unthinkable at this moment.

Get rid of your moneybrain

Advertising and marketing will not gently let go, we have to exterminate it

[โ€“] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 1 points 4 days ago

So people shouldn't be paid for their time and effort?

Let us skip the part where y'all get paid and go directly into another month of work. Surely, when everyone stops getting paid, a new, unthinkable thing will come along.

[โ€“] Azzu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

No, we want everyone to not need a monetary reward anymore and just get enough to live regardless of what they choose to do with their time.

[โ€“] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

By skipping sponsored segments?

[โ€“] Azzu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Yes, for example. Or by not watching the content in the first place. Change never happened because everything worked kinda ok, it happened when things stopped working. The french revolution didn't happen because everyone was well fed.

If sponsored content stops being a viable income method, either the video will stop existing or new ways of monetization will be discovered. New ways of monetization may be "let's just collectively pay artists so they can make videos". Of course that's unlikely, but it's more likely than continuing with what we do right now.

[โ€“] can@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They still get paid and I wouldn't have been watching or listening to the ad read either way. This addon just makes it slightly easier than tapping the right side of the screen 5-6 times. If it takes me say 5 seconds to save the next guy the trouble I'll do it.

[โ€“] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I'd rather pay for a service directly and have that fund the creators and those maintaining the service, without it all being used for profit of the owners (like YouTube premium). That, or have it publicly funded and enough safety nets that people don't need to worry and just make videos for fun. That's just for now, in the future we could go even further beyond that.

It's a community of people who suggest sections of video to skip for they are paid speech and other irritant such as interaction reminders, and other indesirable things, it also includes labelling, such as tangents which some people might want to also skip.

I think it is a natural part of us wanting to reclaim our attention back.

https://github.com/ajayyy/SponsorBlock
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/sponsorblock/
https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/sponsorblock-for-youtube/

It's an addon and we the viewers crowdsource the labelling for the people who come after us

I don't know who ajay is but thank you ajay

[โ€“] Nemo@slrpnk.net 2 points 4 days ago

Thanks for taking the time to explain is such detail!

[โ€“] itkovian@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Me too. Screw sponsors and screw advertisements.

Sometime I land on a 2 minute old video, I watch it and there's an ad segment

I report it and hit refresh, my marked segment appears but also other segments !

and then I realize, I'm not alone !

[โ€“] ClobberBobble48@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They don't do it anymore, but I used to really enjoy that someone used Sponsorblock to mark the Lance Stroll section in F1 post race interviews as off-topic.

That's funny we should have more tags, colours and maybe even the ability to insert comments in the timeline, even if you have to dig a little to see them in the interface. Like a comment section outside youtube, our little clubhouse

[โ€“] Tenderizer78@lemmy.ml -1 points 4 days ago

I don't use sponsorblock. It's pretty easy just to scrub past the sponsor sections and I wouldn't trust an extension to not remove something important.

[โ€“] Bademantel@lemmy.world 0 points 4 days ago

Thank you for your service ๐Ÿซก
