I was interested in signing up for a gym once..when they asked me for the 8th time within the first 10 minutes for my personal information after repeatedly telling them no...I left and told them I don't trust any of them with my information, or to let me cancel after the fact. they were clearly data hungry.

I bought my own gym equipment and never looked back.

I have a decent home setup and thought about joining planet fitness just to have a place to go to change up my routine. I figured hey, it's cheap and who cares. I start the process and go to get my credit card. Oh we actually need a voided check. They run everything through ACH, so I'd have no way to stop payment. Hard pass. Garage gym is good enough.

Had one that said they preferred a voided check. I said in no uncertain terms that I wouldn't provide that and they could use my credit card or nothing. They took the card without further resistance. Ended up being somewhat simple to cancel I remember. But absolutely not giving them a check.

They need your info so they can send you to collections if you chargeback

not worth it. home gym is 10x better then anything they would provide. the constant harassment for my information before even knowing the price or terms is enough to never consider them legit imo.

Any company that allows you to sign up for a service online should be required to provide cancellation online

The Trump administration doing something vaguely pro-consumer? How'd they get him to approve this?

The Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit against the operators of several gym chains, including LA Fitness
