According to the report, the Israeli senior official was released on $10,000 bail after appearing before a judge.

"The documents indicate that Alexandrovich is suspected of seducing a mentally ill child using computer technology to have sex," Ynet said.

Um, 10k feels a bit low...

Citizens still face steeper bail over weed charges. There should be no chance of bail for crimes against children, doubly so for foreigners as they are such a flight risk.

I am not saying I have a better solution, but how long do you think it would take for such a rule to be used to lock up trans people or drag queens?

[–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 1 points 6 days ago

I hate how right you almost certainly are. I still say that at very least foreign nationals accused of sexual and violent crimes should be held without bail so can't simply flee the country.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 15 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It's not a matter of amount; the whole idea of bail is fucked up.

[–] slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org 17 points 6 days ago (1 children)

You are a criminal and a danger to society, therefore you have to be locked away.

Unless of course you have some money.

I agree that the bail system is bad (both practically and morally).

To be clear though, people on bail have not yet been demonstrated in court to be guilty of the crimes they've been accused of. I don't think locking up anyone accused of a crime while they await trial (which could be years) is an improvement.

Doesn’t the constitution guarantees a speedy trial. If he got arrested then they already have evidence tying him to the crime.

[–] brandon@piefed.social 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yes, it does guarantee that. But you're still going to be in jail for weeks to months until your trial is concluded. Many people have been held for years in pretrial detention before being released.

How long would your job keep you on payroll if you were arrested and held in jail? How long would you be able to pay rent or provide for your children? Even a few weeks is enough to be devastating to most people.

In 2019 the average pretrial detention for felonies in New York State was 10 months.

Seems like America has failed to keep up with its own constitution. Either hire enough people to actually expedite the process or throw away the concept that the constitution is important.

We have infinite money for wars, jails, billionaire tax cuts. We apparently don’t have the money to make our legal system work because Americans are too dumb to know the difference.

Bail is a joke. It’s only meant to keep poor people locked up while the wealthy criminals walk around without punishment.

He is white

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 21 points 6 days ago

Why wasn't his passport revoked pending trial? We already know they help war criminals escape. Of course this guy was gonna take off.

A senior Israeli foreign ministry official told Channel 12 on Saturday that "the subject he talks about all the time in an exaggerated way is prostitutes", adding: "That's what he tells everyone about, that's what he likes to talk about the most."

That sounds completely normal. /s

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 14 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Why would he flee? I thought the american law machine and current administration was cool with that kind of behaviour.

[–] BussyGyatt@feddit.org 18 points 6 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

they are, and he didnt flee. 'fleeing' suggests he evaded capture and made his own way to israel. actually he was allowed to leave after his lawful arrest without explanation and in direct contradiction to state and federal law.

edit: he was arrested and charged. official statement from bibi's office included this memorable line:

The employee, who does not hold a diplomatic visa, was not arrested and returned to Israel as scheduled.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aiding_and_abetting:

...In all cases of aiding and abetting, it must be shown a crime has been committed, but not necessarily who committed it. It is necessary to show that the defendant has willfully associated himself with the crime being committed, that he does ... as he would do if he wished for a criminal venture to succeed. Under this statute, anyone who aids or abets a crime may be charged directly with the crime, as if the charged had carried out the act himself.

someone let this guy out of jail after he was arrested, knowing he was a flight risk. someone had to out of their way- much more probably, several people had to go significantly out of their way to make that happen. People don't just fall out of jail. or maybe they do, sometimes, but hey totally unrelated question: who the fuck put convicted serial child sex trafficker Ghislane Maxwell in a minimum security prison (for which she, as a sex offender, was not eligible) while providing her with work-release authorization so that she can leave during the day? Incidentally, did you know that Jeffrey Epstein was allowed work release as a part of his sweetheart deal, and used that opportunity to continue raping children?

They couldn't lock him up, it would have been antisemitic.

[–] MrTolkinghoen@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago

Trump's intervened directly to get him released. You know gotta protect fellow Pedos.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

This is the one the Trump admin bailed out to please Israel.
