I thought that South Africa has been pro Iran for a while now? Can anyone explain why this is particularly controversial?

They are pro-russian too (would be good to give pro-russia SA blacks a first hand taste of russian racism).

It's the timing. The don't want even more issues with the US oligarch regime.

Europe still has bad influence in africa

I think saying that Iran has historically stood for oppressed people should be controversial everywhere.

As if europe don't have such a bloody history and still want control on africa

[–] belastend@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And that makes Iran a champion of oppressed people how?

[–] mrdown@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I personally don't think they are champion of oppresed people because of what it does to oppostion in the country, but they are the one giving palestinians arms to defend themselves agsinst sn 57 years occupation maybe that is what thst guy was refered to .

When pro occupation and genocide supporters talk about how israel is a democracy to justify genocide you don't hear backslash like that

But you should hear backlash like that.

And Iran is currently violently oppressing not only their Kurdish and Balochi minorities, but also women as an entire class.

Minorities in israel are not well treated either

[–] belastend@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 days ago

Yes. I am not defending Israel.
