I was raised by narcissistic and reactionary parents with drug and alcohol problems, so I learned real fast to keep my mouth shut at all times.

It got so severe that I was non-verbal for much of my childhood, and my grandparents thought something was wrong with me so they took me to doctors for all kinds of crazy, primitive brain scans and tests.

I turned it around 180-degrees after growing up and getting out on my own and learning how to socialize and be tactful and learned how to read people and engage in small-talk and the social games we all play. It wasn't until only recently after being alive nearly a half century that I was in fact diagnosed as on the autistic spectrum.

Life is funny.

I’m a black sheep because I couldn’t shut up. Mom abused me and probably fucked my disabled younger brother. Rather than acknowledge that, it’s easier for everyone to pretend that I don’t exist.

are you really cool about a bunch of illegal shit that could net you some jail time?

Depends on what the "stuff/shit" is 😆

Didn't know it was illegal that we were talking about either...

all the best shit is illegal.

  • operating a ham without a license
  • pirate radio stations
  • corporate espionage
  • online privacy through identity theft
  • building things that go boom for fun and profit

I've been tempted to get my ham license for a while but I'm not even sure what I'd do with it. I just want to listen to the chatter!

listen all you want without a license.

just don't broadcast.

shortwave is also pretty fun. with a good antenna and good clouds you can pick up programming from the other side of the world.

God that's so cool. I can deal with not broadcasting, I wasn't intending to either way I suppose! Nothing to say worth clogging up the airwaves haha -- I'll take another look at some beginner-friendly equipment. It all just seemed so expensive last time I checked which was an unwelcome surprise!

It's pretty damn easy to get a technician license, there are many organizations that will do the test for free if the $35 fee is too much to spend on a lark. It allows you to push that button and there's lots of cool digital stuff you can do as well. Equipment can get pretty pricey, though. As true as it is that every ham has a baofeng handheld (or several) they tend to really suck to learn how to use and it very well could hamper your enjoyment of the hobby if you want to transmit. Listening is fine on them, so if that's all you want to do it'll be fine.

If you do want to talk, I would actually recommend starting with GMRS, especially if you have family members you might want to talk to that wouldn't want to get their own ham license. You buy a license instead of testing, and the equipment is basically just locked down ham radios and if your handy, you can use the right old commercial equipment and reprogram them for GMRS use. The community is a bit more newbie friendly since your license extends to your household as well and kids are more common, and a large portion of the community are hams as well.
