Image is of Putin and Scholz sitting on opposite ends of a frighteningly long table back in 2022. Folks, the table is gonna get ten feet longer.

The latest round of US-Russian diplomacy is taking place on August 15th in Alaska, where Putin and Trump are meeting in-person to maybe try and bring an end to this godforsaken conflict. While I don't want to totally discount the possibility that they may come to an agreement - you truly never know! - there's a lot stacked against this encounter yielding much of anything.

Russia appears to have demanded a land swap; that Ukraine fully withdraw from Kherson and Zaporozhye oblasts (in exchange for unspecified Russian gains, but probably parts of Sumy and Kharkov) as a precondition for a ceasefire that could perhaps lead to a permanent resolution of the conflict, and Ukraine seems completely unwilling to do anything of the sort, saying that even if they wanted to, the process of just giving up a couple oblasts would take significant time and require referendums. I say that Russia has appeared to demand it, because there's been a lot of confusion - probably in bad faith - about what Russian diplomats and Putin himself have said and what the demands even are. There are some who speculate that Trump will sell out Ukraine and blame Zelensky for refusing to agree with Russian demands, and there are others who say that this just the latest of many examples of the US and Russia meeting up with such fundamental differences that a deal is impossible, and that Trump fully expects to put sanctions on Russia after Putin declines some harebrained American scheme.

Anyway. After the summit, in late August, Putin is due to arrive for a visit to India, at Modi's invitation. Previously, I was unsure exactly what India would do in response to American sanctions pressure, and now we appear to be receiving an answer, as Modi has made public statements that suggest that he is only getting closer to Russia. Fascinatingly, Modi will soon make his first visit to China in seven years at the annual SCO summit at the end of August, and Putin will be heading to China too on September 3rd. There is an increasing amount of dismissal about the potential of BRICS (especially one that contains India), and that dismissal is certainly rather justified, but I am still deeply curious about what developments may occur as the global south braces to face the remaining ~85% of Trump's presidency.

Directly from the Kremlin yesterday:

http://en.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/77637

Russia’s terms for a lasting peace with Ukraine were announced on June 14, 2024, and have not changed.

What were those conditions?

A recap of Russia’s unchanged peace terms, as outlined by President Putin on June 14, 2024:

— Full withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye regions.

— Ukraine’s renunciation of plans to join NATO and commitment to a neutral, non-aligned, non-nuclear status.

— Demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine in accordance with the parameters agreed upon during the 2022 Istanbul talks.

— Guaranteed protection of the rights, freedoms, and interests of Ukraine’s Russian-speaking population.

— Recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea, Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye regions.

— Lifting of all Western sanctions against Russia.

🟢 Hamas calls for a widespread "Day of Rage" next Friday, August 15, 2025, across the West Bank.

This comes in response to the ongoing genocide, siege, and starvation in Gaza, alongside the escalating settlement expansion in the West Bank, including zionist minister Smotrich's plan for over 3,400 new units and full control of the West Bank.

Hamas emphasizes that the true response to these criminal projects lies in the field, through popular escalation and resistance. The movement urges all factions and the public to unite and participate widely to defend the land against annexation and confiscation plans.

Appeal to overturn sentence against former Colombian president Uribe denied - Prensa Latina

Article

Bogotá, Aug. 13 (Prensa Latina) A court in Rionegro, in the department of Antioquia, denied a legal appeal to revoke the detention of former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe (2002-2010), who is serving a 12-year sentence of house arrest, local media reported today.

The request, known as habeas corpus, was rejected for “lack of legal basis,” according to the ruling of the civil court that heard the case, as reported by RTVC Noticias.

Meanwhile, the former president's legal team is expected to file an appeal against the lower court's ruling today, as today is the deadline for filing the appeal.

The five-day deadline expired on Monday, August 11, but Judge Sandra Heredia granted the request of the defense and the Attorney General's Office and granted two more days.

The appeal must be decided by the Criminal Chamber of the Superior Court of Bogotá. Uribe was convicted on charges of bribery in criminal proceedings and procedural fraud, crimes for which he was found guilty.

According to the judge, the former president's sentence includes the payment of a fine of more than $800,000 and disqualification from holding public office for eight years and four months.

The first instance ruling, contained in a 1,114-page document, clarified that the former head of state must immediately comply with house arrest in order to prevent possible evasion of the sentence.

Heredia considered that the prosecution had convincingly proven that Uribe had asked lawyer Diego Cadena to seek out former paramilitaries to misrepresent the facts before the courts with false statements in exchange for material and legal benefits.

Such testimony also sought to discredit Senator Iván Cepeda, who was recognized as a victim in the proceedings and who, over the past decade, participated in an investigation to determine the former president's links to paramilitarism.

US military deploying forces to southern Caribbean against drug groups - Reuters

Article

WASHINGTON, Aug 14 (Reuters) - The United States has ordered the deployment of U.S. air and naval forces to the Southern Caribbean Sea to address threats from Latin American drug cartels, two sources briefed on the decision told Reuters on Thursday.

The sources had few details of the operation, but President Donald Trump has wanted to use the military to go after Latin American drug gangs that have been designated as global terrorist organizations. The Pentagon had been directed to prepare options.

Trump has made cracking down on drug cartels a central goal of his administration, part of a wider effort to limit migration and secure the U.S. southern border.

The Trump administration in recent months has already deployed at least two warships to help in border security efforts and drug trafficking.

The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Defense Department has begun ordering the deployment of U.S. air and naval forces to the Southern Caribbean Sea.

"This deployment is aimed at addressing threats to U.S. national security from specially designated narco-terrorist organizations in the region," one of the sources said.

The Trump administration designated Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel and other drug gangs as well as Venezuelan criminal group Tren de Aragua as global terrorist organizations in February, as Trump stepped up immigration enforcement against alleged gang members.

The U.S. military has already been increasing its airborne surveillance of Mexican drug cartels to collect intelligence to determine how to best counter their activities. Trump has previously offered to send U.S. troops to Mexico to help combat drug trafficking, an offer Mexico says it has refused.

Lula rejects accusations of human rights violations in Brazil made by the US - Prensa Latina

Article

Brasilia, Aug. 13 (Prensa Latina) President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva today dismissed allegations of human rights violations in Brazil, following the publication of excerpts from a US government report accusing the country of restricting political freedoms.

During the signing of the provisional measure to help sectors affected by Washington's 50 percent tariff increase on domestic exports, Lula criticized the Americans.

"No one is disrespecting human rights standards, as they try to present to the world. Our American friends, every time they decide to fight with someone, try to create an image of the devil against the people they want to fight," said the former union leader.

According to the president, criticizing the human rights situation in the South American giant “was important in the past,” but now, “we must analyze the accused country” before addressing the institutions.

Regarding former President Jair Bolsonaro and his allies, who are being investigated for attempted coup, he reasoned that “they are not being judged by the opposition. They are being judged based on the testimony of those who participated in the coup attempt.”

He specified that the trial against Bolsonaro and his supporters, with the right to defense, “is democracy raised to its fifth power, something I did not have when I was tried. And I did not complain,” he said.

Among the measures announced by Lula's government in response to the tariffs are greater access to credit lines and insurance conditions, tax refunds, and expanded government purchases for sectors affected by the tariffs.

The main plan is a credit line of approximately $5.56 billion for companies. Priority will be given to those most affected and those that are smaller in size.

Guarantee Funds can also be used to protect against risks such as default or contract termination.

Another aspect of the measure is the increase in Reintegra, a federal program that refunds companies for taxes paid on goods destined for export.

Finance Minister Fernando Haddad clarified that the initiatives could be extended to sectors that are not currently on the radar but could be included, depending on new developments or measures adopted by Washington.

As a provisional measure, the package takes effect immediately but requires approval by the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate within 120 days to remain valid.

US President Donald Trump justified the tariff hike as a response to Brazil's alleged attacks on freedom of expression and its treatment of his ideological ally Bolsonaro, who has been accused of being a coup leader.

uncle-ho-2 From the Hanoi Times

Vietnam has launched a nationwide fundraising campaign to support the Cuban people, reinforcing the countries’ long-standing friendship and solidarity.

From someone on twitter:

This campaign is taking the Vietnamese internet with storm. In less than 24h, ~$1 million in donations from the public received. But this is a rare admission from another formally ‘fraternal’ socialist state that Cuba’s situation is extremely severe.

Both of them (Cuba and Vietnam) once challenged Soviet and Chinese chauvinism while combating with the US. Not even the USSR today can invoke as strong Vietnamese feelings as Cuba.

[–] jack@hexbear.net 11 points 1 hour ago

Vietnam is truly a land of contrasts

[–] iByteABit@hexbear.net 14 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Materially supporting existing socialism living in the wolve's den is chauvinism apparently

[–] jack@hexbear.net 12 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Yeah the only section of that that makes sense is Chinese chauvinism against Vietnam. When was China chauvinist against Cuba or the USSR against either?

[–] Muinteoir_Saoirse@hexbear.net 1 points 1 minute ago

If you read Fidel Castro: My Life, during his conversations with Ignacio Ramonet, while Fidel expresses a lot of positive sentiment towards the USSR, he does talk a bit about the USSR treating them as secondary partners (especially during the Cuban missile crisis). The Cuban government was hardly included in any of the negotiations with America.

"The Soviets managed to obtain absolutely trustworthy information about that plan, and they notified Cuba of the existence of the danger, although they weren't totally explicit. . . The details of the plan were learned some twenty years later, when the documents related to the subject were declassified and published by the US government."

"In my view, there was a clear desire to obtain an improvement in the balance of power between the USSR and the United States. I confess I was none too happy about the presence of those weapons in Cuba, given our interest in avoiding the image of Cuba as a Soviet base. . ."

"We didn't like the course the public debate was taking. I sent Che, who was minister of industry and a member of the National Directorate of the ORI, to explain my view of the situation to Krushchev. . . But I couldn't manage to persuade him."

"He made the mistake of rejecting the real debate, which should have been over the sovereignty of Cuba, its right to defend itself, to protect itself."

"We learned from news reports that the Soviets were making the proposal to withdraw the missiles. And it had never been discussed with us in any way!"

"Krushschev should have told the Americans, 'The Cubans must be included in the discussions.' At that moment they lost their nerve, and they weren't firm in their determination. Out of principle, they should have consulted with us. Had they done that, the conditions would most certainly have been better. There would have been no Guantanamo Naval Base; there'd have been no more high-altitude spy-plane reconnaisance. . . All of that offended us a great deal; we took it as an affront. And we protested. And even after the agreement, we kept firing on the low-level flights. So they had to suspend them. Our relations with the Soviets deteriorated. For years, all this had an influence on Cuban-Soviet relations."

This image is still ridiculous, but it can definitely be argued that from a Cuban perspective, the USSR treated them as vassals/junior partners, rather than as a sovereign socialist state that wasn't there to be directed at the Soviets' will.

The Trump administration announced on Wednesday that it was revoking the US visas of Mozart Júlio Tabosa Sales, Brazil's health minister, and Alberto Kleiman, a former Brazilian government official. The decision was revealed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on social media platform X. Without naming names, he stated that he was taking steps to revoke the visas of several Brazilian government officials. He also said that the Mais Médicos program, in which the Brazilian federal government hired Cubans to fill vacancies in the Unified Health System (SUS), was “an inconceivable diplomatic coup.”

"StateDept is also taking steps to revoke visas and impose visa restrictions on several Brazilian government officials and former PAHO officials complicit in the Cuban regime’s forced labor export scheme. Mais Médicos was an unconscionable diplomatic scam of foreign ‘medical missions.’"

"StateDept is taking steps to impose visa restrictions on several African, Cuban, and Grenadian government officials complicit in the Cuban regime’s coerced forced labor export scheme. We are committed to ending this practice. Countries who are complicit in this exploitative practice should think twice."

"The United States is expanding its Cuba-related visa restriction policy. @StateDept has taken steps to restrict visa issuance to Cuban and complicit third-country government officials and individuals responsible for Cuba’s exploitative labor export program. We will promote accountability for the Cuban regime for oppressing its people and those who profit from forced labor."

In a previous post, Rubio said he was imposing visa restrictions on African, Cuban, and Grenadian government officials—and their families—due to accusations that they deprived Cubans of essential medical care. When talking about Mais Médicos, the Trump administration says that Mozart Sales and Alberto Kleiman “used PAHO as an intermediary with the Cuban dictatorship to implement the program without following Brazilian constitutional requirements, circumventing US sanctions against Cuba and knowingly paying the Cuban regime what was owed to Cuban medical workers.”
