I'm so excited for the second Fediforum of 2025 in October. The first one earlier this summer was excellent.

Say what you will about what happened earlier in the year with on of the organizers. Johannes has done a good job finding new board members to ensure the Fediforum continues.

Paid online event? Weird. What happened to IRC for these sorts of meetings. I'm old.

Not too old. But this is like a BarCamp. The schedule isn't set until the day of. It's lots of fun!

troyunrau@lemmy.ca fwiw the organizers are quite transparent with how the tickets are priced and where the money goes.

Hosting a conference, even one that's online, does take money.

I worked on open source software for over a decade (KDE). When we started having in person conferences, that's the first time money changed hands. And even then, the conference attendance was free. Viewed through this lens of experience, this feels like an attempt to earn money from the fediverse for running video chats, rather than a grassroots effort.
